How Long Does a Dust Storm Warning Last? Air Takes Longer
A dust storm warning's expiration is a short-fuse NWS window, but the dust doesn't clear when it expires — PM10 stays elevated for hours and fine particles linger for days. Use the before/during/after smart-home playbook to keep purifiers, HVAC recirculation, and PM-based automations running on the air-recovery clock, not the warning clock.
Short answer: a Dust Storm Warning lasts until the expiration time printed in the alert, but your air-quality routine should last longer. The National Weather Service defines a Dust Storm Warning as a storm-based warning for convectively driven dust that reduces visibility to one-quarter mile or less with winds of 25 mph or greater, and the warning carries its own explicit “until [time]” validity window.[1] One real example was issued at 4:14 PM and was valid until 5:00 PM MST.[2] That alert clock is real. It is just not the same thing as the dust leaving your house.
For a homeowner deciding what to do with purifiers, HVAC, windows, and automations, there are three clocks to keep separate:

One quick caveat for weather-radio people: National Weather Radio SAME alert-duration coding can show preset windows such as 8, 12, or 18 hours for some messages. That is message encoding, not a promise that the physical dust storm lasts that long.[3] The phone alert’s expiration, the storm’s passage, and the air cleanup are still separate.

The alert can expire before the air is done with you
The NWS safety page describes dust storms as events that “usually only last a few minutes,” and NOAA comments cited by NPR describe haboobs as typically lasting 10 to 30 minutes.[4][5] Arizona emergency guidance puts the range at a few minutes up to an hour at most.[6] That is the storm-passage clock: the dramatic part, the wall outside the window, the moment everyone takes a photo and then assumes the event is ending.
The particle clock is less tidy. The American Lung Association says dust particles can linger from a few hours up to 10 days, and NOAA NESDIS notes that dust can hang in the air for days to months after the visible storm ends.[7][8] Those ranges are broad because “dust” is not one neat pollutant. Coarser PM10 matters during dust storms, while finer particles can remain suspended and move indoors in less visible ways.
The recent Phoenix example is the one that should make a smart-home user nervous about automatic shutoffs. During the August 2026 Phoenix Category 5 dust storm, AZFamily reported that ASU researchers measured elevated dust concentrations for about three hours, with a peak PM10 reading of 5,841 µg/m³.[9] That does not make the new Phoenix dust-storm scale a universal standard, and it does not mean your consumer sensor can accurately reproduce a regulatory PM10 peak that high. It does show the practical problem: a warning can expire while the recovery clock is still running.
Why your AQI app may feel late, calm, or both
Daily AQI and even hourly summaries can flatten exactly the kind of short evening spike a dust storm creates. A GeoHealth study of 93 convective dust events in the Greater Phoenix area found average 10-minute PM10 peaks of 2,174 µg/m³, compared with daily averages of 92.8 µg/m³; the 10-minute peaks were about 20.5 times the daily averages and about 2.2 times the hourly averages.[10] The study also found that most events lasted under an hour, many lasted under 20 minutes, and 67.7% occurred between 18:00 and 23:00 local time.[10]
That is not an argument that a $60 sensor is as accurate as a regulatory TEOM monitor in an extreme PM10 event. It is an argument for having an indoor signal at all. If your phone app is reporting a smoothed outdoor index while your hallway sensor is still climbing, the automation should listen to the hallway. Before the wall arrives: make the house harder to load with dust
The useful pre-warning routine is not glamorous. Close windows and doors. Stop bathroom fans, kitchen exhaust, whole-house fans, and anything else that intentionally pulls indoor air out and replacement air in. Pick the room that will stay cleanest, then give the purifier a job before the indoor number jumps. A bedroom with fewer exterior doors is usually easier to protect than a kitchen-family-room space with a sliding door and a range hood. Do not burn a fresh filter at the wrong moment. If the filter is already clogged, replace it before dust season because airflow matters. But when a warning is on the phone and the wall is coming, the better default is to run the filter you have, then inspect or replace it after the event has loaded it. Set the HVAC rule before you need it
This is where dust-storm advice often looks contradictory because homes are not built the same way. The American Lung Association says to stay indoors, close doors and windows, and run air conditioning on recirculation so outside air is not drawn in.[7] Chubb advises turning off HVAC systems to keep dust out of the system.[11] Both can be reasonable depending on what the equipment is doing.
Use this test: if your HVAC can run in a true recirculation mode without pulling unconditioned outdoor air, recirculation plus a good return filter is useful. If the system brings in outdoor air, uses an evaporative intake, has a fresh-air damper you cannot close, or behaves like a dust pump, turn that outside-air path off during the storm. The thermostat label matters less than the actual airflow path. During the warning: seal, recirculate if safe, and let filtration be loud
During the warning window, the job is to keep outdoor air outside. Stay indoors, keep doors and windows shut, and avoid quick trips through the garage or patio that reset the house with dirty air.[7] Washington Ecology’s dust-storm guidance also points to HEPA filtration or a DIY box-fan filter and recommends an N95 if you must go outside.[12] Indoors, that translates to a boring but effective rule: fewer openings, fewer exhaust fans, more filtration.
If the HVAC passes the recirculation test, run it that way. If it fails, leave the central system out of the fight and let portable filtration carry the clean room. A smart purifier can go to high or turbo without waiting for a comfort setting; the noise is less annoying than letting the first half-hour of dust become the air you sleep in. If your purifier’s auto mode responds mainly to PM2.5 or VOCs, do not assume it understands a PM10-heavy wall of desert dust. Force the mode when the warning arrives or when your PM10 monitor crosses your action level.
Compare indoor and outdoor readings as a loop, not as a one-time glance. If outdoor PM is high and indoor PM is still low, the house is holding and you should avoid opening anything. If indoor PM starts rising, increase filtration and check the obvious leak or intake paths. After the alert expires: do not automate the all-clear from the timestamp
The most common smart-home mistake is a neat automation that turns everything back to normal at the warning expiration. That is tidy for software and bad for lungs. The Phoenix August 2026 event is the clean example: the official warning window and the visible passage were shorter than the roughly three-hour period of elevated dust concentrations reported by ASU researchers.[9]
After the warning expires, keep the house in recovery mode until indoor particle readings have fallen and stayed down. “Stayed down” is doing real work here. A single dip can happen when a purifier’s plume hits the sensor or when a door has not opened for a while. Wait for a stable trend, especially in the room where people will sleep. If the outdoor number is still high, treat the house like a protected bubble and postpone airing it out.
This is also the right time to inspect filters, not the moment the warning first arrived. Check the portable purifier prefilter if it has one. Replace filters that are visibly loaded or have reached their service limit, and vacuum around returns or purifier intakes with care so you are not simply throwing settled dust back into the room. Automation hooks that help without pretending the house is a lab
A good dust-storm automation is less about cleverness than about refusing to stop early. The useful triggers are warning received, outdoor PM spike, indoor PM spike, HVAC recirculation state, and recovery trend. PM10 belongs in that list. PM2.5 is still useful, especially for the lingering fine fraction, but a dust-storm routine that never sees PM10 is missing the coarse-particle part of the event.

For most homes, a timer should only be the backup. A reasonable fallback might keep purifiers high for a set period after the warning expires, but the better all-clear is measured: indoor PM10 and PM2.5 have dropped, the outdoor plume has moved on, and the HVAC is no longer at risk of acting like an intake. The warning expiration tells you when the official short-fuse alert window ends. Purifiers, recirculation, and filter changes should follow the air-recovery clock.
