Smart Thermostat Settings for an Extreme Heat Watch

When the National Weather Service issues an extreme heat watch, the energy-saving defaults that worked all summer can turn into comfort and safety risks once the heat arrives. This pre-event checklist covers the exact settings to change on Nest, ecobee, Honeywell Home, and Sensi in the 24–72 hours before the event.

If your phone shows an Excessive Heat Watch or an Extreme Heat Watch, treat it as a setup window. The National Weather Service’s watch tier is the “Be Prepared” stage: dangerous heat is possible, the exact timing may still be developing, and the useful work happens before the hot afternoon arrives, not after the house has already drifted warm. Some NWS materials and local offices vary between “Excessive Heat Watch” and “Extreme Heat Watch,” but the operating meaning is the same for a thermostat: use the 24- to 72-hour window to make the system predictable. The issue is not that smart thermostats are bad at heat. The issue is that the features that quietly save money on a normal July weekday—Eco temperatures, Away detection, utility events, humidity add-ons, and fan choices—can all make decisions at the wrong time during a heat watch. This is when I want fewer surprises, even if that means giving back a few days of savings.

Set a temporary baseline before changing platform features

Start with the setpoint you actually want the house to hold while people are home. Trane’s consumer guidance, drawing on DOE-style summer advice, frames 75–78°F as a reasonable occupied cooling range and treats 78°F as an energy-saving anchor, not a universal comfort answer. The same guidance warns against letting away settings climb so high that the air conditioner stops cycling enough to remove humidity, suggesting an away cap no higher than about 80–85°F. [2]

That away cap matters during an extreme heat watch because the recovery penalty is not just a number on the thermostat. A house that is allowed to coast too high may be asking the air conditioner to recover during the same late-afternoon hours when outdoor heat, solar gain, and grid stress are all at their worst. If pets, older adults, medical equipment, or heat-sensitive rooms are part of the household, treat the home as occupied for this pass rather than relying on a deep empty-house setback.

  • Occupied cooling: choose the temperature you already know the home can hold comfortably, often somewhere in the 75–78°F range rather than automatically defaulting to 78°F.
  • Away cooling: cap the setback before the watch becomes a warning; do not let Away, Eco, Vacation, or geofencing logic float into the high 80s.
  • Sleep cooling: use a known comfortable number, especially for upstairs bedrooms that lag behind the thermostat.
  • Restore date: decide now when normal energy-saving settings come back, so the temporary override does not become the rest of the summer.

The 24–72 hour smart-thermostat pass

Open the thermostat app while the weather is still merely inconvenient. The useful check is not every setting in the app; it is the handful of controls that can override your normal schedule or change cooling behavior while no one is watching.

Nest: Eco, Rush Hour Rewards, Seasonal Savings, and Cool to Dry

Nest deserves the most careful pass because several legitimate Nest features can touch cooling behavior. Google’s own support material groups energy-saving behavior around Eco Temperatures, Eco when Away, Rush Hour Rewards, and Seasonal Savings. Those are useful features in ordinary weather; during an extreme heat watch, each one should be checked instead of assumed harmless. [3]

  • Eco Temperatures: check the cooling Eco temperature and make sure it is not set so high that the home becomes hard to recover before people or pets return.
  • Eco when Away: if the house will be occupied intermittently, or if pets stay home, consider turning off automatic Eco behavior for the watch window or keeping the Eco cooling limit close to your temporary away cap.
  • Rush Hour Rewards: if enrolled, confirm whether an event could adjust the thermostat during peak heat. Opt out in advance if comfort and predictability matter more than the event credit this time.
  • Seasonal Savings: check whether it has been making schedule adjustments. If the schedule has crept warmer than you intended, correct the schedule before the event.

Cool to Dry is a separate check, and it should not be treated as a mystery if the thermostat runs the air conditioner for humidity. Google says Cool to Dry can turn on cooling when indoor humidity rises above 75% while someone is home, or above 65% when the thermostat is in Eco/Away behavior. Google also says it can cool up to 3°F below the set temperature, with a 75°F floor. [5]

That can be acceptable in a sticky house where humidity is the real comfort problem. It can also surprise someone who expected the thermostat to hold a single cooling number. Before the watch turns into the event, decide whether Cool to Dry is helping this house or adding runtime you do not want. What I would not do is leave it enabled without knowing what it is allowed to do.

ecobee: Community Energy Savings and comfort settings

For ecobee, keep the watch-window pass focused on the behavior ecobee documents: Community Energy Savings. Ecobee says participating thermostats may pre-cool before a community energy event and then adjust during the event, and it says users can opt out of an event at any time. [4]

That pre-cool-then-adjust pattern is exactly the kind of thing to review before dangerous heat. Pre-cooling at noon may be fine. A setpoint adjustment at 5 p.m., when the west-facing rooms are already carrying heat, may not be fine. If you are enrolled and you do not want the thermostat participating during this watch window, opt out before the event rather than waiting for the house to feel wrong.

  • Check the ecobee app for Community Energy Savings participation or event notifications.
  • Set your Home and Away comfort settings to numbers you are willing to live with during the watch window.
  • Avoid changing advanced thresholds unless you already maintain those settings and understand your equipment.
  • If ecobee-specific symptoms show up later, move to the ecobee troubleshooting guide rather than changing random configuration values during peak heat.

Honeywell Home: schedules, geofencing, and utility programs

On Honeywell Home and Resideo-style setups, the safe pre-event check is straightforward: inspect every place the thermostat can decide the house is away, asleep, on vacation, or eligible for an energy event. Do not stop at the visible setpoint on the wall. The wall display may show the current number while the next scheduled period is still ready to push the house warmer.

  • Open the schedule and look at the hottest part of each watch-window day, not just the next hour.
  • Check Home/Away or geofencing settings if the thermostat changes behavior when phones leave the house.
  • Cancel Vacation or Hold settings that were meant for a normal empty house, unless the hold is your deliberate safer setpoint.
  • Look for utility or energy-program enrollment in the thermostat app, the utility app, or email notices.

Honeywell users often have more than one control surface: thermostat screen, manufacturer app, utility portal, and sometimes a home platform such as Alexa or Google Home. During a heat watch, the winning setting is the one that actually runs at 4 p.m., so follow the chain all the way through.

Sensi and Amazon-linked homes: check the routines outside the thermostat

For Sensi, the same conservative pass applies: review the cooling schedule, any temporary holds, geofencing or occupancy behavior if you use it, and any utility program that can affect cooling. If the thermostat is connected to Alexa or another automation layer, check routines that mention temperature, Away mode, peak hours, or household presence.

This is where otherwise sensible automations become irritating. A routine that raises the thermostat when the last phone leaves is fine for a grocery run in mild weather. During a heat watch, it may start a setback exactly when you wanted the house held steady for pets, returning family members, or a hard-to-cool upstairs room.

Fan mode is not a place to improvise

Leave the fan on Auto unless continuous fan has already proven useful in your house. Auto gives the system a simple job: run the blower when cooling is called. Fan On can help mix air in some layouts, but in other homes it can make comfort feel worse after a cooling cycle or move warm air from problem rooms without removing more heat.

The humidity point is the one I would not ignore. Trane’s away-setting caution is partly about making sure the system still cycles enough to manage moisture, not just about lowering the air temperature. [2] If the house has a history of feeling clammy, use a fan setting and away cap that preserve normal cooling cycles instead of chasing a theoretical airflow improvement.

A simple watch-window configuration

If you want the shortest copyable version, use this for the 24–72 hours before the heat arrives:

  1. Pick a known occupied cooling setpoint, usually in the 75–78°F range if that is comfortable for the household.
  2. Cap Away, Eco, Vacation, and geofencing cooling so the home does not drift into a hard recovery.
  3. If pets or heat-sensitive occupants are home, treat the house as occupied rather than empty.
  4. Check utility-event participation and opt out early if you do not want the thermostat adjusted during peak heat.
  5. Review humidity features such as Nest Cool to Dry so unexpected cooling is understood before it happens.
  6. Use Fan Auto unless Fan On is already known to improve comfort in this house.
  7. Check Alexa, Google Home, and other routines for temperature changes triggered by time, presence, or peak hours.
  8. Set a reminder to restore normal energy-saving defaults after the heat event passes.

If you also run shades, plugs, fans, sensors, or alerts, pair this thermostat pass with broader extreme heat safety automations. If you are trying to build a city-specific cooling schedule rather than a watch-window override, use the more targeted 115-degree heat-wave schedule or Houston 100-degree thermostat settings instead.

Stop here if the event has already become a problem

This is a pre-event recipe. If the thermostat is blank, unresponsive, changing itself during the event, short-cycling, or the house is already overheating, switch to heat-wave smart-home fixes instead of continuing to tune settings while the indoor temperature is climbing.

Once the watch and the worst heat pass, restore the energy-saving defaults you actually want. During the watch window, the standard is simpler: known setpoints, limited surprises, and no scramble after the dangerous heat has already arrived.
