If you are buying smart home wildfire protection devices before the next smoke season, the first question is not whether the app looks nice. It is whether the alarm will join the hub stack you already run, and whether the exact model is certified for the market where it will be installed. A smoke alarm that is clever in Home Assistant but not acceptable to your local code path is not a clever purchase. A US-certified alarm that only talks to a cloud app you never monitor is not much better.

The rough price band in the current smart-smoke discussion is not wild — Matter Alpha’s survey places models around $39.99 to $69.99 — which is exactly why price should not be allowed to decide the purchase before pairing and certification do [1]. A $40 alarm that cannot legally or reliably do the job in your house is not a deal.
EN 14604/CE does not answer the US UL 217 question
Certification is not a decorative regional footnote. EN 14604/CE can be meaningful for a European smoke alarm, but it does not automatically answer the question a US homeowner, insurer, building inspector, or local fire marshal is likely to ask: is this alarm listed for the relevant US standard, including UL 217 for smoke detection?
That distinction matters most with the Matter-over-Thread crop. Sensereo looks like the kind of device smart-home people have been waiting for, and the MS-1 review material is genuinely useful. But Matter Alpha’s certification summary describes the Sensereo/MS-1 family as EN 14604/CE with UL pending, not as a settled US-listed alarm [1]. That is not a small-print problem. It is the gate.
Heiman is the more delicate case. Matter Alpha reports the Heiman S1-M as meeting UL 217 10th Edition and California State Fire Marshal certification [1]. That may turn out to be the US-ready Matter-over-Thread smoke alarm people want. But for a life-safety purchase, a reviewer-origin statement should be treated as a lead, not the finish line. Before buying, match the exact model number against an authority listing from UL, CSA, or the California State Fire Marshal. If the package, listing database, and seller page do not line up, the status is still Investigating.
This is the dullest part of the shopping process, and also the part most likely to save you from buying the wrong device. A product can be technically smart, visually polished, and still be the wrong smoke alarm for a US installation.
Transport decides whether “works with my home” is true

Matter is not a magic word that erases hardware requirements. A Matter-over-Thread smoke alarm needs a Matter controller and a Thread Border Router. If your home has Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or Home Assistant, you still need to know which device is performing which role. A phone app alone is not a Thread mesh.

That is the sort of smart-home visibility Matter should be good at: local-ish structure, less dependence on a one-off cloud integration, and fewer vendor silos.
The most important detail in that review is not the entity list. It is that the alarm continued to operate as a standalone smoke alarm when the network was down [2]. That is the baseline. The smart layer can notify, log, test, and automate. It must not be the thing that allows the detector to detect smoke and sound locally.
Response-time anecdotes should stay in their lane. SmartHomeScene reported about 5 seconds in its MS-1 test, while Matter Alpha described roughly 15 to 30 seconds in an MSC-1 test context [2][1]. Those are not enough to create a universal ranking of Matter smoke alarms. They are useful reminders that test setup, smoke source, model variation, and firmware can matter, but they should not outrank certification, pairing, placement, and standalone alarm behavior.
Why many US buyers still end up with Wi-Fi alarms

Wirecutter’s current post-Nest-Protect smart smoke alarm picks are not a victory lap for Matter. They are a reality check. The Kidde Smart Smoke + CO is framed around Alexa and Google users, the First Alert SC5 around Google Home and Nest Protect interconnect behavior, and the Kidde Ring Smart Smoke + CO around the Ring path with professional monitoring available at $5 per month [3]. That is app-and-platform territory, not the clean universal Matter story many buyers would prefer.
Still, for a US homeowner buying today, that may be the more defensible path. These are current US-market recommendations, and the transport story is at least obvious: Wi-Fi, vendor app, named platform support. You should still verify the exact model’s listing and installation requirements, but you are not trying to make a Europe-certified Matter device answer a US UL 217 question it has not clearly answered.
Reliability also has to sit above smart-home neatness. Wirecutter relays NFPA 2024 data showing that hardwired alarms operated in 94% of reported US home fires, compared with 85% for battery-only alarms, and that 66% of home fire fatalities were in homes with battery-only alarms [3]. Those figures do not prove that any one smart model is safer than another. They do explain why power source, battery condition, installation, and fail-safe behavior are not boring side issues.

Workaround means it can notify through an indirect bridge or app path. Investigating means a reviewer, marketplace page, or manufacturer claim still needs authority-listing verification.
- Fail-safe behavior: the alarm must detect and sound locally if Wi-Fi, Thread, the hub, the app, or the internet is unavailable.

The 2026 buying judgment
Matter-over-Thread smoke alarms are promising. The Sensereo MS-1 shows that Matter can expose useful diagnostics and controls to Home Assistant, and Heiman may become the US-ready Matter candidate if its reported UL 217 and California State Fire Marshal status is verified against authority listings. That is a good direction, but it is not enough to buy on.
For most US buyers in 2026, the safer shopping order is still: choose a detector with a clear US-market safety path, then make sure its transport matches the hub stack already installed. If that leads to a Wi-Fi Kidde, First Alert, or Ring route instead of a prettier Matter-over-Thread diagram, so be it. A smoke alarm is not a protocol trophy.
Do not buy a smart smoke alarm that depends on the network to perform its basic alarm function. The smart layer is there to extend the warning, not to make the warning possible.
