Fix HomeKit 'No Response' on Apple Watch After watchOS 27

Apple Watch HomeKit not working after watchOS 27 update; iPhone still controls accessories

Last updated

As of 2026-08-25, treat “Apple Watch HomeKit not working after watchOS 27 update” as a beta-era, watch-side sync problem until your symptoms prove otherwise. The key pattern is simple: the Apple Watch Home app shows “No Response” for all or most accessories, while the iPhone or iPad still controls the same lights, locks, sensors, and scenes. That pattern has shown up in earlier watchOS update reports too, where users described Home failing on the Watch only while the rest of the Home setup remained alive.[1][2]

Nothing below is labeled Confirmed for watchOS 27 unless it has been independently reproduced against watchOS 27. The useful fixes are still worth trying, but they are status-labeled as Workaround or Investigating so you do not accidentally turn a small Watch sync hiccup into a full Home rebuild.

First, make sure this is really the watch-only failure

Before restarting hubs, routers, bridges, or every bulb in the house, check the asymmetry. The Watch is a controller. If another Apple Home client is still working, your accessories and hub have already given you useful evidence.

The problem started around a Home architecture prompt, an old-device warning, or hub change rather than the Watch update itselfPossible Home architecture or hub-requirement issueCheck whether the home was migrated and whether you still have a supported home hub

That third lane matters in 2026. Apple’s old Home architecture support cutoff was reported around February 10, 2026, and Apple’s own Home architecture and hub guidance makes the hub requirement worth checking if your problem is not isolated to the Watch.[3][4][5] Do not assume that is your cause if the iPhone still works. Just keep it as a fork in the road.

If the iPhone works, continue here. If it does not, use the broader HomeKit No Response troubleshooting path instead, because the right target has changed.

The watch-side fix order to try first

Work from smallest to largest. The goal is to make the Watch re-check account state, refresh Home data, change its connection path, and restart cleanly without deleting the Home, removing accessories, or disturbing the people who can still use the house from their phones.

5Restart the Apple WatchLow-risk reset — sensible after the sync nudges above

1. Re-confirm the Apple Account on the Watch

Status: Workaround. This is the first fix to try because it is small, reversible, and aimed directly at the Watch’s synced identity.

  1. On the paired iPhone, open the Watch app.
  2. Go to General.
  3. Open Apple Account.
  4. If you are prompted, re-enter the Apple Account password.
  5. Open Home on the Watch again and wait a moment before judging the result.

This exact account re-confirmation path appears across separate community reports where the Watch Home app was not syncing correctly, including Apple Community and Reddit threads about Home on Apple Watch failing while other clients still worked.[6][7][8] That does not make it an official watchOS 27 fix. It does make it a good first move because it does not disturb the Home itself.

2. Toggle Background App Refresh for Home

Status: Workaround / Investigating. Use this if the Watch still shows stale or offline Home data after the account check.

  1. On the iPhone, open the Watch app.
  2. Go to General, then Background App Refresh.
  3. Find Home.
  4. Turn Home off, wait briefly, then turn it back on.
  5. Open Home on the Watch and give it time to repopulate rooms and accessory state.

One Apple Community report tied this Background App Refresh toggle to recovery of the Watch Home app.[6] It is not strong evidence by itself, but it fits the failure signature: the phone knows the current home state, while the Watch is stuck with a bad or stale view.

3. Force-quit Home, or restart if the watchOS 27 beta app switcher is unreliable

Status: Investigating. If you can close the Home app cleanly on the Watch, do that and reopen it. If your watchOS 27 beta build is also affected by the reported Digital Crown app-switcher problem in beta 1–3, do not fight the app switcher; restart the Watch instead.[9]

This is one of those places where a beta bug can make normal troubleshooting look broken. The point is not the gesture. The point is to stop the Watch Home process and make it request current state again.

4. Turn off Watch Wi-Fi temporarily so it falls back through the iPhone

Status: Workaround. Older Apple Watch Home reports describe recovery after turning off Wi-Fi on the Watch so it communicates through the paired iPhone over Bluetooth instead.[10][11]

  1. Keep the iPhone nearby and unlocked if possible.
  2. On the Watch, open Control Center.
  3. Turn Wi-Fi off on the Watch.
  4. Open Home on the Watch and wait for accessory state to refresh.
  5. If Home starts responding, turn Watch Wi-Fi back on and test again.

This step is easy to misread as a network fix. It is narrower than that. If the iPhone is already controlling the Home, the network is not automatically guilty. The useful part is forcing the Watch to take a different route back to the already-working phone and Home state.

5. Restart the Apple Watch

Status: Low-risk reset. Restart the Watch after the account, refresh, app, and connection nudges. A restart is not dramatic; it is still Watch-only. It clears the local session without asking your Home hub, bridges, accessories, scenes, or invited users to pay the price.

  1. Power off the Apple Watch.
  2. Wait briefly.
  3. Power it back on.
  4. Open Home on the Watch while the iPhone is nearby.
  5. Test one simple accessory before testing scenes, automations, or complications.

How to judge whether the fix worked

Do not use a complicated scene as the first test. Pick one accessory that the iPhone can already control. A plain light or outlet is better than a multi-device scene because it tells you whether the Watch regained current Home state before you start diagnosing unrelated scene behavior.

  • Good sign: rooms and accessories repopulate on the Watch, and a single accessory responds.
  • Partial sign: the Home app opens, but some accessory tiles remain stale. Wait a little, then test from the iPhone again before escalating.
  • Bad sign: the Watch still shows broad “No Response,” while the iPhone continues to work. Continue only with Watch-side or account-side steps, not hub deletion.
  • Different problem: the iPhone also loses control. Leave this article’s watch-only lane.

When this is no longer a Watch-only problem

Move to the broader ladder when the iPhone, iPad, Siri, automations, or multiple household members also lose control. Apple’s official “No Response” guidance covers the general case: checking device power, Wi-Fi, home hub status, software updates, and restarting relevant devices.[12] That official ladder belongs here, after the watch-only check, not before it.

If you are also running iOS beta software, the iOS 27 beta HomeKit runbook is the better next stop. If Siri still controls devices while the Watch does not, the Siri-still-works diagnostic path can help separate hub health from client-side display problems.

Also check the role of the Watch itself. The Apple Watch can control Home accessories, but it is not the Home hub. If you are deciding whether a Watch model change affects hub behavior, use a compatibility reference such as Ultra 4 vs. Ultra 3 HomeKit compatibility rather than treating the Watch as the center of the Home architecture.

Last-resort reports to keep in their place

There are community reports of harder fixes: hard-resetting the Watch, removing the user from the Home and adding them again, or unpairing and re-pairing the Watch from backup.[13][14][15] They may help some individual setups. They are not first-line fixes for the watchOS 27 symptom pattern where the iPhone is still working.

The cost is not just time. Removing people from a Home can affect permissions. Re-pairing a Watch can create notification, wallet, complication, and app cleanup. Reset-level steps are reasonable only after the watch-side sequence fails and after you have confirmed the problem has not widened into a normal HomeKit outage.

Current status on 2026-08-25: if the iPhone still controls accessories and the Apple Watch alone shows “No Response” after the watchOS 27 update, start with Watch-side re-sync nudges. Re-confirm the Apple Account, reset Home’s Background App Refresh state, close or restart the Watch Home app, try the Wi-Fi-to-Bluetooth path, then restart the Watch. If that sequence fails, escalate to the general HomeKit No Response ladder or Apple’s official guidance before considering reset-level fixes.
