Can the Pixel Watch 5 Control Google Home? We Tested It
A dated, per-capability test of the Pixel Watch 5 as a Google Home controller: which control paths — app, Favorites, complications, quick actions, voice — work from the wrist and which stay phone-only. Every capability carries a status label and verification date so pre-purchase shoppers and new owners know exactly what the watch can and cannot do.

If you are buying the Pixel Watch 5 because you want a tiny Google Home remote on your wrist, the useful answer is not a single yes. A hallway light toggle, a thermostat adjustment, a lock command, a camera feed, an automation, and a voice request do not all travel through the same path. The Pixel Watch 5 is the right 2026 watch to examine because it ships as Google’s current Wear OS 7 watch with Gemini placed more prominently in the watch experience, but that still does not make every Google Home capability wrist-native or locally executed. Pixel Watch 5 Google Home control status — checked August 25, 2026
Status labels here are deliberately narrow. As of this update, no NestGrid on-hand Pixel Watch 5 run has been completed, so the wrist-control paths below are not marked Confirmed unless the boundary is settled by source documentation, such as the watch not appearing in Google’s Matter hub or Thread border-router list. Google’s Wear OS Home documentation tells us what must be tested; it does not, by itself, prove every path on this specific watch, software build, Home app version, account, and device mix.

The wrist routes that matter in daily use
The cleanest version of this experience is easy to imagine: raise the wrist, tap Google Home, hit the hallway light, and keep walking. That is the version worth wanting. It is also the version that needs more precision than “works with Google Home.” On Wear OS, Google’s support page describes a broad Home control surface, including lights, thermostats, locks, cameras, TV controls, home/away changes, and automations. The catch is right there in the same support area: some devices may show their status on the watch but still require the phone to adjust them. [2]
That status-only warning is not a footnote. It is the difference between a watch that actually saves a phone grab and a watch that merely confirms you still need the phone. A light that exposes on/off, brightness, color, and temperature on the wrist is a very different result from a thermostat card that opens, shows the current temperature, and refuses setpoint changes until the phone comes out. Google documents deep controls for several categories, but the practical test has to follow each device class far enough to see whether the control is adjustable, read-only, or delegated.
The Home app path should be judged in layers. First: does the app open reliably on the watch and show the right home? Second: can it reach the room and device without too much scrolling? Third: does the device page actually expose the control the user came for? A hallway light toggle is a low bar. Thermostat mode and setpoint, lock/unlock, camera feed loading, 2-way talk, and TV D-pad controls are the places where the watch either becomes a real controller or turns into a status viewer with a nicer launcher.
Favorites, now living in the Wear OS world that Google has been renaming from Tiles toward Widgets, are tempting because they sound like the fastest route. The older rollout report is encouraging but limited: it described the Google Home Favorites tile as a shortcut surface that opens a device page, not as a row of inline toggles. [3] That distinction matters at the wrist. A shortcut that saves app navigation is still useful; it just should not be sold mentally as the same thing as a one-tap light switch.
Complications belong in the same bucket. A device complication can be excellent if the household has one action that gets used constantly: garage camera, front-door lock, bedroom lamp, thermostat. But the reported behavior to re-check is that the complication opens the device page. [3] On Pixel Watch 5, the real questions are less glamorous than the feature name: which watch faces allow the complication, how quickly it opens Home, whether the device page lands in the right place, and whether the intended action can complete without reaching for the phone.
Automations need their own label, not a borrowed one
Automations are where a lot of compatibility language gets too generous. If a watch can show progress after a phone starts a task, that is not the same as the watch starting the automation. If the Home app exposes one automation type but not another, that is not “automations work” in any useful buyer sense.
The current source picture is mixed enough to keep this under Investigating. Google includes automations in its Wear OS Home support map, but 9to5Google’s Pixel Watch 5 initial review noted that Task Automation could not be started from the watch and that progress appeared through At a Glance only after the task was launched from the phone. [2][4] That is one reviewer’s observation, not a final ruling on every automation path. It is exactly the kind of report that should be reproduced with a real home, multiple automation types, and the current Home app before anyone marks the feature as either working or missing.
Voice control is still unresolved on Pixel Watch 5
Gemini makes the Pixel Watch 5 feel like it should be a more capable smart-home controller, but the smart-home part cannot be inferred from the Gemini headline. Google’s Pixel Watch 5 materials and Engadget’s review discussion of offline Gemini examples point to local or offline help for things like timers, workouts, music, settings toggles, and opening apps. Smart-home command execution is not in that offline list. [1][5]
So the safe reading is narrow: Pixel Watch 5 may offer better wrist voice convenience, but the available sources do not prove offline smart-home control. They also do not settle whether Gemini or Assistant is the component executing Google Home voice commands on the watch. Until a test run says “turn off the hallway light,” “set the thermostat,” “lock the front door,” and “show the camera” under known connectivity conditions, voice stays Investigating rather than Confirmed.
That boundary is not anti-Gemini. It is just the difference between on-watch language features and the smart-home stack that has to reach the user’s Google Home, Home Graph, device cloud integrations, and local Matter infrastructure where applicable. For the same reason, a watch can be a good command surface without becoming the place where the home is actually hosted.
The Pixel Watch 5 is not a Matter controller or Thread border router
This is the line that keeps the whole compatibility question honest. Pixel Watch 5 can sit on your wrist as a Google Home control surface. It is not, based on Google’s Matter documentation, one of the devices that supplies the home’s Matter controller or Thread border-router infrastructure. Google describes Matter control through Assistant, the Home app UI, or Smart Display UI, and its supported Google hub and Thread border-router device list includes products such as Nest devices and Google TV Streamer, not Pixel Watch. That means a Matter bulb, plug, lock, or sensor does not become watch-paired in the way Bluetooth headphones pair to a watch. The home still needs the appropriate Google Home account, permissions, network path, cloud or local routing, and, for Thread devices, a Thread border router somewhere in the setup. The watch can ask for an action. It does not replace the fabric that lets the action reach the device.

What to check on your own watch
For a new owner, the fastest useful test is not to browse feature lists. Pick the five things you actually wanted the watch to replace and try them separately.
- Open Google Home on the watch and control one light. Check whether on/off, brightness, and color or temperature appear if the device supports them.
- Open a thermostat and try changing the setpoint and mode, not just reading the current temperature.
- Open a lock and see whether the watch can complete the command or requires a phone confirmation path.
- Open a camera and test feed loading and 2-way talk separately.
- Add a Home Widget or complication for the most-used device and see whether it toggles inline or simply opens the device page.
- Try one automation from the watch, then the same automation from the phone, and note whether the watch starts it or only shows status after the phone starts it.
- Try voice commands while the watch and phone are online, then avoid assuming the same command works offline unless it has been tested that way.
Permissions can also masquerade as compatibility failure. If one household member sees devices that another person cannot control, that is likely an account, home membership, or permission-model issue rather than a Pixel Watch 5-specific limit. Where the current answer lands
The Pixel Watch 5 looks like Google’s strongest wrist surface for Google Home so far, but the status table is the answer: app control, Favorites or Widgets, complications, automations, and voice each need their own label. A device opening cleanly from a complication does not prove automations start from the watch. Offline Gemini handling a timer does not prove offline smart-home control. A Matter light responding through Google Home does not make the watch a Matter controller.
Buy or keep the watch for convenient wrist access if a dated test, or your own setup, confirms the paths you actually use every day: lights, selected device pages, quick camera checks, thermostat glances, or shortcuts that save a phone grab. Do not buy it expecting a standalone Matter controller, a Thread border router, or an offline Gemini smart-home brain.
