Use Your iPhone 18 Pro Max as a Home Security Camera

Yes, you can use an iPhone 18 Pro Max — or, more sensibly, an older iPhone replaced by it — as a home security camera. The catch is the part that gets skipped too often: iOS 26 does not include a built-in “use this iPhone as a security camera” mode. Apple’s own Home camera setup material is about adding compatible security cameras and using HomeKit Secure Video, not turning the iPhone’s camera module into a native Home accessory by itself. [1]

That means every working route depends on a third-party camera app, a bridge into Apple Home, or a local video stream into Home Assistant. The phone also has to survive the boring parts of camera duty: constant power, stable Wi-Fi, an app that stays active, heat management, and an eventual end to security updates. CNET and ZDNET both put the old-phone-as-camera setup in the same practical lane: plug it in, keep it near reliable Wi-Fi, and avoid hot locations; Reolink is blunter that DIY iPhone camera setups are not a real substitute for 24/7 recording. Keep the last row separate in your head. An iPhone can be the camera you point at a hallway. It cannot also be the Apple Home hub that makes HomeKit Secure Video work. Choose the route before you worry about the iPhone 18 Pro Max camera

The right answer depends less on whether the sensor is excellent and more on where you expect the video to appear. A phone streaming to one companion app is easy. A phone appearing as a HomeKit camera in Apple Home is harder. A phone feeding Frigate with local RTSP is more flexible, but it asks you to own the troubleshooting.

Route 1: use a cloud camera app when you just need a view

This is the least ceremonial route: install a camera app on the iPhone, install its viewer app on your current phone or tablet, sign in, position the old iPhone, plug it in, and test the stream from outside the room. Alfred, Manything, and Presence are the familiar examples in this category, but check their current App Store listings and subscription terms before relying on any old pricing writeup. Camera-app plans change, and the difference between “free live view” and “useful recording” is often where the paid tier starts.

This route is fine for temporary indoor monitoring. It is also the route I would hand to someone who does not care whether the video appears in Apple Home. The tradeoff is simple: you are trusting that app’s account system, cloud behavior, notification model, and background limitations. If the app stops streaming or iOS suspends something you expected to remain alive, the smart home did not fail; the phone-app arrangement did exactly what phone-app arrangements tend to do.

  • Use it for: temporary indoor views, pets, a short trip, a room you want to check manually.
  • Do not use it for: unattended security coverage where missed recording has real consequences.
  • Before leaving it alone: confirm whether clips are recorded, where they are stored, whether motion alerts require a subscription, and whether the app keeps streaming after the screen locks.

Route 2: Apple Home via Pylo is the most interesting workaround

If your real goal is “I want this iPhone camera in the Home app,” Pylo is the route to examine first. Its App Store listing says the app turns an iPhone or iPad into a HomeKit camera, uses a pairing-code flow into Apple Home, runs “100% local,” does not require a cloud account or subscription, and supports HomeKit Secure Video recording. The same listing also says the app must stay in the foreground on an unlocked device. [5]

That last sentence is not a footnote; it is the operating model. A normal HomeKit camera is an appliance. An iPhone running Pylo is still an iPhone running an app. If someone swipes away the app, locks the phone, trips the cable, or moves the phone because they need the charger, the camera role can vanish. That is why Pylo belongs in Workaround status, even though the idea is exactly the right shape for Apple Home households.

What Apple Home still requires

HomeKit Secure Video is not just a camera feature. Apple requires a home hub and an iCloud+ plan. Apple’s iCloud guide says the 50 GB iCloud+ tier supports one camera, the 200 GB tier supports up to five cameras, and 2 TB, 6 TB, and 12 TB plans support unlimited cameras. It also says recorded video is available for 10 days and does not count against iCloud storage. [6]

Apple also notes a useful limit that gets missed in camera planning: if you have more cameras than home hubs can analyze, clips are still recorded, but they may not be analyzed. [6] For a single repurposed iPhone in a small Home setup, that may be irrelevant. In a house already full of cameras, doorbells, and sensors, it matters.

  1. Install Pylo on the iPhone you want to repurpose.
  2. Keep the iPhone on the same trusted Wi-Fi network as the Apple Home setup.
  3. Use Pylo’s pairing-code flow to add the camera in the Home app.
  4. Leave the iPhone unlocked with Pylo in the foreground, exactly as the app listing requires.
  5. Trigger motion in front of the camera and confirm what appears in Home: live view, alerts, recording, and clip history.
  6. After a full day, check whether the stream survived heat, charging, notifications, Wi-Fi roaming, and normal household interference.

The test should include the thing you actually care about. If you want HomeKit Secure Video clips, do not stop at “I saw live video once.” Confirm clip capture, clip playback, and whether the event type you expected was detected. If you only need a Home tile for occasional live viewing, say that out loud and treat it as a lighter-duty setup.

Route 3: Home Assistant and Frigate via Guardian Eye WebCamera

For Home Assistant households, the promising route is not “make the iPhone HomeKit-native.” It is “make the iPhone expose a local camera stream that Home Assistant can consume.” Guardian Eye WebCamera is the current app to watch here. In a Home Assistant Community post, the developer describes a TestFlight beta that turns an old iPhone into a local ONVIF Profile S/T/M and RTSP camera, with an on-device RTSP server, H.264/H.265, WS-Discovery, and no cloud requirement. That is enough to be interesting, not enough to be declared solved. The source is a first-party developer thread, and the app is still a beta. Until someone has run it for weeks through Home Assistant, go2rtc, and Frigate with restarts, Wi-Fi drops, iOS updates, heat, and charging quirks, it belongs in Investigating status.

What the RTSP and snapshot tests are actually proving

The RTSP URL is the live video feed. If a player, go2rtc, Home Assistant, or Frigate can open it, you have proven that the phone is acting like a network camera endpoint at that moment. The developer’s thread gives this RTSP pattern: [7]

The snapshot URL is a still-image check. It is useful because it removes some moving parts: if the snapshot loads in a browser, the phone is reachable on the network and the app is serving at least a still frame. The developer’s snapshot test endpoint is: [7]

A sane Home Assistant test starts small. Put the iPhone on power, give it a stable Wi-Fi location, open the app, confirm the snapshot in a browser, then open the RTSP stream in a local player. Only after that should you add it to Home Assistant or Frigate. If you cannot keep the test stream stable for a day on the bench, do not mount it over a door and pretend the bridge will become more reliable once it is harder to reach.

  • For Home Assistant live view: first prove the RTSP stream opens reliably on your LAN.
  • For Frigate: confirm the stream codec and resolution behave acceptably before building automations around detection.
  • For privacy: keep the stream local and do not expose the RTSP endpoint directly to the internet.
  • For reliability: power-cycle the phone, reboot Home Assistant, interrupt Wi-Fi, and see what recovers without touching the iPhone.

Local video is better for many smart-home owners, but “local” does not automatically mean “appliance-grade.” A beta app on an aging iPhone still depends on iOS behavior, charging, thermals, and whatever happens after the next update.

Route 4: buy a dedicated camera when reliability matters

There is a point where repurposing the iPhone stops being clever and starts being a weekend tax. If you need set-and-forget monitoring, a cheap indoor camera is the pressure valve. The price range is plain enough: a Wyze Cam v4 is around $35, while Blink Mini pricing commonly sits around roughly $15–$35 depending on sale and bundle timing. Against the resale value, battery wear, heat risk, and maintenance of an iPhone, that is not a high bar.

This does not mean every cloud camera is morally superior to a repurposed iPhone. It means the dedicated device has the shape of the job: mount, power, app, firmware, expected camera behavior. If the camera will be used for a child’s room while traveling, a phone may be enough. If it is supposed to document a break-in, catch a leak, or alert you while nobody is home, the maintenance burden matters more than the satisfaction of avoiding one more device.

The five constraints to test before you trust the setup

The camera hardware is the fun part. The operating conditions decide whether the system survives Tuesday.

Power

Assume the iPhone must stay plugged in. A large battery helps during a short outage or a temporary placement, but a security camera that dies overnight is a camera-shaped decoration. Put the charger where it cannot be casually borrowed, bumped, or switched off with a lamp. If your smart home already has weak points during outages, the phone-camera route inherits them; this is the same kind of planning problem covered in smart home devices and power outages.

Heat

Do not put the phone in a sunny window and call it a security camera. Continuous camera use, charging, and sunlight are a bad mix. CNET and ZDNET both warn readers to avoid heat sources when using an old phone this way. [2][3] If the best view requires direct sun, that is a strong hint to use a real camera with a better mounting location.

Foreground behavior

This is where many phone-camera projects quietly fail. If the chosen route requires the app to stay open, test that exact condition. Lock the phone. Let a notification arrive. Let the display dim. Reboot it. If the stream does not resume without someone touching the phone, write that down as an operating requirement, not as a surprise waiting for the least convenient night.

Recording location

Live view is not recording. Recording is not necessarily useful recording. For cloud apps, confirm the plan, clip length, retention, and download behavior. For Pylo, confirm whether HomeKit Secure Video clips appear in Home as expected under your iCloud+ and hub setup. For Home Assistant or Frigate, confirm whether the stream is being recorded by your own system and how much storage it consumes.

Security-update horizon

An old iPhone on your Wi-Fi is still a networked computer with a camera and microphone. Wipe personal data before redeploying it, keep it updated, remove unnecessary apps, use a strong device passcode, and set a use-by date. When the phone is no longer getting security updates you are comfortable with, retire it from camera duty.

What the iPhone 18 Pro Max changes — and what it does not

As of August 25, 2026, the iPhone 18 Pro Max has not been released, so its smart-home-camera value is still Rumored/Unverified. The hardware leaks are still worth watching, just not worth building the whole decision around.

MacRumors reports Chinese regulatory battery filings showing 5,391 mAh for the Nano SIM/China version and 5,567 mAh for the eSIM/US version of the iPhone 18 Pro Max. [8] 9to5Mac reports a leaker claim that the Pro Max may get a variable aperture, described as f/1.6–f/4.0, and may have camera features not shared with smaller Pro models. [9] GSMArena’s specifications page lists an iOS 27 context along with a 48MP triple-camera system and LiDAR. [10] Forbes points to Apple’s usual September cadence, with a possible September 9 keynote and September 18 on-sale timing. [11]

If those details land close to reality, the phone should be better at temporary camera duty than an older model. More battery can extend an untethered test. Better optics and a variable aperture could help low-light scenes. LiDAR may help the phone understand space, though that does not automatically translate into better third-party security-camera behavior. The 18 Pro Max may be a better camera; it still will not be a native Apple Home security camera unless an app or bridge makes it one.

The iOS 27 smart-home rumors are a separate track. The practical answer

Use the iPhone 18 Pro Max as your phone. If upgrading leaves you with a previous iPhone, that older device is the better candidate for repurposing. Put it on constant power, keep it out of heat, pick the route that matches your ecosystem, and test the exact thing you expect it to do: live view, HomeKit Secure Video, RTSP ingestion, Frigate recording, or simple motion alerts.

If the test requires the phone to stay unlocked with one app in the foreground, say that plainly to everyone in the house. If the stream fails after a reboot or a warm afternoon, do not build automations on it. And if the camera’s job is important enough that you will be angry when a cable gets knocked loose, buy the dedicated camera.
