Galanz Refrigerator Recall Affects These Model Numbers

Status note — Aug. 1, 2026: The Galanz refrigerator recall affected models and date-code rules below are confirmed from CPSC recall 26-649, announced July 30, 2026. The remedy is an official free in-home repair program, but this page has not independently verified completed repair outcomes yet. [1]

Start with the white nameplate on the upper-left corner of the back of the refrigerator. This recall is a two-part check: the model number must match one of the five models below, and the date code must fall from 201812 through 202012. A matching model number by itself does not put the refrigerator in this recall. [1]

How to check the nameplate without guessing

You are looking for two separate strings on the same white specification label. Do not use the color, handle shape, store receipt, or “retro” styling as the deciding evidence. The CPSC notice identifies the affected refrigerators by model number and date code, not by appearance alone. [1]

If the refrigerator is pushed against a wall, use a flashlight and look at the upper-left corner of the back panel. The label should show “Galanz,” then the model number and date code. Write both down exactly before deciding what to do next. A single wrong digit changes the answer.

Read the date code as year plus month. A code of 201812 means December 2018. A code of 202001 means January 2020. A code of 202012 means December 2020. Those three examples are inside the affected date-code window if the model number also matches. [1]

If your model number is one of those five and your date code is 201812, 201901, 201902, or any month through 202012, treat the unit as recalled and follow the unplug-and-register instructions below. How to interpret your result

The middle cases are where people can get misled. A Galanz retro refrigerator with a recalled model number but a date code outside 201812 through 202012 is not in this recall under the CPSC criteria. That does not make every future problem impossible; it means this particular recall does not cover that unit.

If the label is damaged, blocked, or unreadable, do not invent the date code from the purchase date. Contact Galanz through the recall channels and ask them to verify the unit from whatever photos, serial information, or purchase records they request.

If both parts match, unplug it and register for the repair

CPSC’s remedy instructions are direct: consumers with recalled refrigerators should immediately stop using and unplug the unit, then contact Galanz to schedule a free in-home repair. The remedy described in the recall is a repair program, not a refund program and not a replacement program. [1]

Use those channels even if you bought the refrigerator from Home Depot or Amazon. Galanz is the contact for scheduling the in-home technician visit. As of Aug. 1, 2026, the official notice provides the remedy path, but completed technician visits have not yet been independently checked here.

If food is inside, handle that as a storage problem after the unit is unplugged, not as a reason to keep a recalled refrigerator running. Why the recall is being treated seriously

The recall covers about 121,680 Galanz retro 7.6 cubic-foot top-freezer refrigerators sold at Home Depot stores nationwide and on Amazon.com from January 2019 through September 2022 for $330 to $520. [1]

CPSC says Galanz received reports of 34 fires involving the refrigerators. One fatality was reported by a local fire department. The agency describes the hazard as a risk of serious injury or death from fire and burn hazards; the notice does not identify a specific failed component, so component-level guesses should not be treated as recall facts. The CPSC notice names Home Depot of Atlanta, Georgia, and Galanz Americas Limited Company of Ridgefield Park, New Jersey, as importers, and Zhongshan Galanz Consumer Electric Appliances Co. Ltd. of China as manufacturer. It also includes the standard warning that federal law prohibits any person from selling products subject to a Commission-ordered recall or a voluntary recall undertaken in consultation with CPSC. The model list is not enough

For this Galanz recall, the safe way to decide is not “I found my model in a headline.” It is: model number first, date code second, both from the white nameplate on the back. If both match, unplug the refrigerator and register for the free in-home repair.
