Is Verizon actually down, or is it your gear?
Smart devices offline during a Verizon outage; distinguish carrier outage from local gear recovery failure.

When a Verizon outage leaves home internet and smart devices offline, the fix does not start with trusting one green status message. On January 14, 2026, TechRadar’s live coverage recorded exactly the kind of contradiction that sends households in circles: Verizon’s own Network Status checker showed no issues while Downdetector was showing more than 180,000 reports, and Verizon later said service was resolved at 10:15 PM ET.[1]
That does not mean every offline camera, smart plug, thermostat, or hub is Verizon’s fault. It means the carrier checker is not the all-clear for your house. The useful first move is smaller and more annoying: prove whether your home network recovered.

The January outage matters. Broadband Breakfast later reported more than 2.3 million user reports connected to the event and said Verizon described the major outage as caused by a software issue.[2] Those totals corroborate that a real Verizon disruption happened. They still do not diagnose the router sitting on your shelf, the ONT in the closet, or the mesh node hiding behind the TV.
Start with the house, not the map
Do this before you factory-reset anything, delete devices from apps, or start moving plugs around the room.

The second-device test is deliberately plain. If your phone says every smart device is offline, open a normal website from another Wi-Fi device. If that works, Verizon is probably not your immediate problem; your smart-home platform, hub, local Wi-Fi band, or device cloud may be the next place to look. If nothing on Wi-Fi works, turn Wi-Fi off on your phone and try the same site over cellular. If cellular works but home Wi-Fi does not, stop blaming the smart plugs. Look at the gateway.
Read the Verizon gateway light before you touch the smart devices

For Verizon gateways, the light is the fastest useful clue. HighSpeedInternet summarizes the practical meanings this way: steady white means connected, blinking white means the gateway is setting up, and amber or red means there is no connection.[3]
- Steady white: the gateway believes it has a connection. If websites load but smart devices remain offline, the next problem is likely inside the home network or smart-home stack, not a live Verizon outage.
- Blinking white: the gateway is still setting up. Give it a short window to finish before you start rebooting hubs and cameras. If it never settles, treat it as a gateway or service-recovery problem.
- Amber or red: the gateway does not have a connection. Do not waste the next 20 minutes power-cycling individual bulbs. Check for a wider outage, then do one Verizon-specific recovery pass.
The steady-white case is where smart-home owners lose the most time. A carrier outage can end, the gateway can reconnect, and a hub or Wi-Fi device can still sit in a bad state. That is not Verizon being innocent; it is just the wrong layer to keep staring at.
Fios, 5G Home Internet, and wireless are not interchangeable
Be precise about the Verizon service you have. A wireless outage may affect phone service and can matter directly if your home internet is Verizon 5G Home Internet. It does not automatically prove a fiber Fios failure, and Verizon directs Fios customers through a separate outage path.[3]
That distinction matters in a kitchen crisis. If your phone is showing one bar and the Verizon mobile network is messy, your Fios gateway can still be fine. If your Fios gateway is amber or red, treat that as its own problem: either Fios service is affected in your area, the ONT/router path failed to recover, or the home hardware needs attention.
Do one short Verizon recovery pass
This is not the moment for a twelve-step ritual. The goal is to separate “Verizon is still down” from “my gateway never came back cleanly.”
For a basic Verizon router restart, Verizon’s own no-connection flow says to unplug the router from power, wait one minute, and plug it back in.[4] Let it come back up, then re-check the gateway light and a normal website from a second Wi-Fi device.
For Fios homes with a Battery Backup Unit in the path, Verizon says holding the Alarm Silence button for 10 seconds resets the unit; the reset can interrupt service for three to five minutes. Verizon also states that the 12V battery backs up voice service only, not internet or TV.[5]
After that, stop guessing. If the gateway is still amber or red and outside reports are rising, waiting may be the rational choice. If the gateway returns to steady white and ordinary browsing works, move the problem back inside the house. Use outside reports carefully
Outside reports are useful because Verizon’s January 14 checker did not tell the whole story. They are not magic. Downdetector spikes, social posts, and news liveblogs can corroborate that other people are having trouble at the same time. They cannot tell you whether your ONT came back, whether your gateway is stuck, or whether a smart-home hub failed to rejoin Wi-Fi.
The sane pattern is: check Verizon’s status page, check a second source, then check your own gateway. If Verizon says no issues but reports are exploding and your gateway is amber or red, do not let the green checker bully you into pretending service is fine. If Verizon says no issues, reports are quiet, and your gateway is steady white, the smart-home failure is probably local or platform-specific.
Some community leads are worth watching but not worth treating as facts. App oddities, IP-passthrough “offline” rumors, and model-specific 2.4 GHz complaints may explain a particular household, but they remain unverified unless Verizon, the router vendor, or repeatable testing backs them up.
Document before you call
The worst time to assemble evidence is after the outage is over and the app has refreshed into a bland “everything looks good.” Save the boring details while the failure is happening.
- The time home internet or smart devices first went offline.
- The time service returned, even if smart devices needed more time to recover.
- Screenshots of Verizon’s status page, including a “no issues” result if that is what it showed.
- Screenshots of outside outage reports or credible news coverage at the same time.
- Your gateway light state: steady white, blinking white, amber, or red.
- Which service failed: Fios, Verizon 5G Home Internet, wireless phone service, or some combination.
- Which household devices failed: all Wi-Fi devices, only smart-home devices, only cameras, only one hub, or only one phone app.
- What recovery steps you took, including the router restart time and any BBU reset.
- Any Verizon chat, ticket, or call reference number.
That list is not busywork. It keeps the conversation from collapsing into “my smart home was offline yesterday.” It lets you say, for example, that Fios was down from one timestamp to another, the gateway was red, Verizon’s checker showed no issue, outside reporting showed a wider event, and service returned only after a specific time.
Credits are real, but the rules are narrow
Do not call Verizon with only “Downdetector was high.” Call with the product, duration, and evidence. HighSpeedInternet reported Verizon media-team guidance that a wireless or 5G Home Internet interruption credit requires an outage lasting at least 24 consecutive hours, caused by Verizon, and requested within 180 days. The same report notes that refunds are not automatic and that policy can vary by state and product.[3]
New York has a narrower automatic-credit rule: qualifying 24-hour outages affecting 100 or more subscribers can trigger automatic credits. That is not the same thing as saying every brief interruption, every smart-device recovery problem, or every national report spike earns a bill credit.[3]
The January 14 event had its own specific relief. Verizon’s update page said eligible customers could redeem a $20 account credit through the MyVerizon app, limited to one per account and applied within one to two bill cycles.[6] TechRadar’s live coverage also reported the $20 credit in connection with that outage.[1]
The clean way to ask is not to demand a generic outage refund. Say which Verizon service was interrupted, how long it was out, why you believe it was Verizon’s fault, and whether you are asking under the reported 24-hour interruption-credit standard, a state rule, or a specific event credit such as the January 14 MyVerizon credit.

The decision that matters
- Wait if outside reports are strong, your Verizon product matches the reported trouble, and your gateway still shows no connection after one short recovery pass.
- Fix locally if the gateway is steady white and ordinary browsing works, but smart devices, hubs, or cameras remain offline.
- Call Verizon if the outage was long enough or event-specific enough to matter, and you have timestamps, screenshots, gateway state, product type, and return time ready.
Verizon can be genuinely down even when its checker says otherwise. The January 14, 2026 outage proved that. Your fastest reliable move is still local verification first, then documentation if the outage was real, Verizon-related, and long enough to fit the credit rules.
