Is Your Smart Device at Risk of a Lithium-Ion Battery Fire?

A smart doorbell that feels warmer than usual, a camera pack pushing its cover outward, a robot vacuum that starts hissing from the charging dock — those are not “wait and see” moments. The warning sequence for a lithium-ion battery failure is physical and fairly plain: excessive heat, swelling or bulging, unusual hissing or popping, a strange odor, then white or gray wispy smoke. FSRI/UL’s Take C.H.A.R.G.E. guidance treats that smoke as immediate fire danger and warns that from the first sign of a lithium-ion battery fire, a household may have less than one minute to escape [1].

For lithium-ion battery fire safety, smart-home devices deserve their own lane. Wireless security-device fires appear to be very rare, and a battery-powered camera is not the same risk category as an e-bike battery pack [2]. Still, “rare” does not help much when the thing on your wall is hot, swollen, or smoking beside the front door. At that point, the useful question is narrower: what sign are you seeing, and what action does it require right now?

The warning sequence starts before flames

Battery devices get warm in normal use. A camera charging in the sun, a vacuum battery just off the dock, or a doorbell after a long video session may not feel room-temperature. The first safety line is crossed when the heat is excessive for that device, appears suddenly, concentrates around the battery area, or arrives with another sign: swelling, a chemical or sweet-metallic odor, hissing, popping, or smoke.

  • Excessive heat: stop using and stop charging the device. Do not leave it on a charger to “finish.”
  • Swelling or a cover that no longer sits flat: treat the battery as failed, even if the device still powers on.
  • Hissing, popping, or a new sharp odor: move people and pets away from the area and do not handle the device unless you can do so without putting yourself near smoke, heat, or blocked exits.
  • White or gray wispy smoke, flame, or spreading heat: leave the area and call 911.

The mistake is waiting for the later signs because the earlier ones are inconvenient. A swollen pack inside a camera can still run. A vacuum can still start. A doorbell can still answer a motion event. Continued operation does not prove the battery is safe; it only proves the device has not failed completely yet.

First response: what to do with the device in front of you

The first few decisions should reduce charging energy, reduce exposure, and get people out of the path of a developing fire. This is not the moment to open the shell, pry out cells, or test whether one more reboot clears the problem.

If there is no swelling, odor, hissing, smoke, or visible damage, the problem may be charging behavior rather than a failed battery. Fix that immediately. USFA/FEMA advises charging and storing lithium-ion batteries at room temperature and not charging them below 32°F or above 105°F [3]. NFPA and FDNY guidance also points to the boring details that prevent trouble: use the manufacturer-supplied or approved charger, stop charging when the battery is full, and do not charge devices on beds, couches, near exits, or anywhere a fire would block the way out [4][5].

  • For a doorbell or outdoor camera, check whether direct sun, enclosure heat, or a recent mounting change explains the temperature.
  • For a robot vacuum, check whether the dock sits near curtains, a couch skirt, a pile of shoes, or the only exit from a room.
  • For an always-plugged display, tablet, or repurposed phone panel, treat new swelling or heat as a battery problem, not as a Home Assistant uptime problem.

For always-on wall panels made from older phones or tablets, battery aging changes the calculation. The same warning signs apply, and the charging setup matters more because the device is powered continuously. A swollen battery is already a failed battery

Swelling is one of the few signs a homeowner can identify without tools, and it deserves more respect than it usually gets. University of Reading safety guidance says a swollen lithium-ion battery should not be used, charged, punctured, or compressed; it should be replaced and handled as a damaged battery [6]. iFixit’s swollen-battery guidance contains repair-oriented handling procedures, but that belongs in professional or highly controlled repair territory, not in a hallway emergency with a hot camera or vacuum pack [7].

Do not try to make a bulging pack fit back under its cover. Do not tape a swollen battery door shut. Do not keep using the device because the app still reports 80 percent battery. That is the small control window: stop the energy flow, stop the device use, and keep the failed pack out of the escape path until it can be handled through the manufacturer, a qualified repair shop, or municipal household hazardous-waste service.

The failures that matter are often mechanical, not mysterious

A lot of battery-safety advice gets lost in chemistry. The smart-home cases worth remembering are more concrete: the wrong screw went into the wrong place, a casing was punctured, a battery pack overheated, or a product with an unresolved hazard stayed in use. Those are the facts an owner can actually check.

Doorbells and cameras: screw length can become a battery hazard

The Ring Video Doorbell 2nd Generation recall is the cleanest example of a tiny installation error becoming a battery problem. CPSC announced the recall on November 10, 2020, covering about 350,000 U.S. units after 85 incident reports involving incorrect screws overheating the battery, including 23 ignitions and 8 reports of minor burns. The practical lesson was specific: the short blunt security screws belonged at the device base; the long pointed screws were for the mounting bracket [8].

The Wyze Solar Cam Pan recall shows the same kind of hazard in a different shell. CPSC announced the recall on June 4, 2026, for about 321,360 U.S. units. The agency said assembly instructions led users to secure the solar panel with long flat-head screws that could puncture the battery casing; Wyze had received 13 overheating reports, including 6 reports of cameras exploding or catching fire and 6 reports of minor burns [9].

That is why “use the included hardware” is not just tidiness. If a camera kit contains two screw lengths, assume the difference matters. If a bracket screw bottoms out, pierces plastic, or suddenly feels wrong, stop. Backing out a screw is cheaper than discovering that the resistance was a battery casing.

Vacuums: stop-use language is not decoration

Cordless vacuums sit at an awkward boundary: they are household appliances, they charge unattended, and their packs can store more energy than a small doorbell. CPSC’s April 3, 2025 warning on INSE cordless stick vacuums was unusually blunt: consumers should immediately stop using them. The agency cited 23 reports of the vacuums igniting, melting, smoking, or overheating, including at least 10 fires, and said no acceptable remedy had been agreed to [10].

The Rowenta recall is a different decision path. CPSC announced it on July 2, 2026, for about 3,660 cordless vacuum cleaners using battery model ZR0097U2 with date codes 23/24, after 2 U.S. overheating reports. The remedy was a free replacement battery [11]. Same category, different owner action: one case requires immediate stop-use with no acceptable remedy listed by CPSC; the other points affected owners toward a replacement battery.

Robot vacuums: do not let the dock create the escape problem

Robot-vacuum fires are not something to dramatize, but they are not imaginary. In January 2024, Local 10 reported a Miami Gardens house fire involving a robot vacuum, with one person airlifted to a hospital [12]. One case does not establish frequency. It does show the part that matters in a home: a charging appliance can turn into a room problem quickly, especially if the dock is near furniture, clutter, or an exit route.

Where the device goes next

Once people are safe and there is no active smoke or fire, the next question is not whether the device can be made to work again. It is who should handle it. Failed and recalled lithium-ion batteries do not belong in household trash, curbside recycling, or ordinary store battery-drop boxes; CPSC recall and warning language for affected products points consumers toward local household hazardous-waste procedures instead [9][10][11].

  • Contact the manufacturer when the device is under recall, under warranty, or tied to a known replacement program.
  • Contact your municipal household hazardous-waste service when you have a swollen, damaged, failed, or recalled battery and need disposal instructions.
  • Call 911 when there is smoke, flame, spreading heat, or any sign that the situation is moving beyond a device problem.
  • Report an unresolved product hazard to CPSC at SaferProducts.gov, especially if there was overheating, smoke, fire, injury, or property damage.

Most smart-home batteries will never become a fire. The ones that do usually give the household a short, physical warning window first: heat that is wrong for the device, a swollen pack, hissing, odor, or smoke. Use that window. Stop charging, stop using, protect the exit path, get people and pets away, and hand the failed device to the right channel instead of trying to prove it still works.
