HomeKit devices show No Response after iOS 26.6 update

Status: Workaround/Investigating, not Confirmed. If your HomeKit devices look broken after the iOS 26.6 security update, do not start deleting accessories yet. The visible event was probably the iPhone update, but the part of the home that actually coordinates lights, locks, sensors, Thread devices, and automations is usually the home hub layer.

The reason to start there is simple: Apple’s iOS 26.6 and iPadOS 26.6 security notes, published for the July 27, 2026 release, list security fixes but no HomeKit-specific entry. The release was large — Apple’s notes and coverage of the update counted more than 75 security issues, including 78 vulnerability entries and 87 CVEs — but that still does not make it a HomeKit accessory change log.[1][2]
What did ship the same day matters more for this failure pattern: tvOS 26.6 and HomePod 26.6 were also released on July 27, 2026.[3] A homeowner sees “I updated my iPhone,” while the house may have quietly updated the Apple TV or HomePod that was acting as the active Home hub. Add one more dated gate: Apple ended support for the previous Apple Home architecture on February 10, 2026, with the upgrade located inside Home app > More > Home Settings > Software Update.[4][5]

The short version before anyone resets a bridge
Work the problem in this order. Each move below can be reversed or waited out. Removing accessories and rebuilding rooms cannot.

First, rule out the February 2026 architecture cutoff
This is not the most interesting fix, but it is the one hard gate you should clear before touching hubs. Apple says the upgrade is inside the Home app under More > Home Settings > Software Update, and support for the previous Apple Home architecture ended on February 10, 2026.[4]

One important boundary: the architecture cutoff does not explain every “No Response” tile after iOS 26.6. It is just early enough and absolute enough that skipping it can make every later step look mysteriously ineffective.
Now find the active Home hub

Open the Home app, tap More, go to Home Settings, then Home Hubs & Bridges. Apple’s hub setup documentation identifies this screen as the place where Home shows the active hub and the Automatic Selection control.[6]
Write down which device is active: a specific HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV. Do not just note “Apple TV” if there are several. In a real house, the difference between the wired Apple TV near the router and the old Apple TV in a back bedroom is often the difference between a stable Home and a wall of dead tiles.
This is where the iOS blame usually gets messy. The iPhone is the screen in your hand, so it gets accused first. But if the active hub changed after the same-day HomePod or tvOS update, the phone may be faithfully showing a Home database that the new active hub is not coordinating correctly. That is a hub handoff problem, not proof that the iPhone security patch broke every accessory.

Force a clean hub handoff
If Automatic Selection is on and Home has chosen a hub that is poorly located, recently updated, or simply not the hub that normally carries the house, turn Automatic Selection off long enough to choose a better candidate. Prefer the hub with the strongest network path and the best physical position for the home: often a wired or centrally placed Apple TV, or a HomePod mini that sits near Thread accessories.
- In Home Settings > Home Hubs & Bridges, note the current active hub.
- Disable Automatic Selection if the screen allows you to choose another hub.
- Select a different eligible HomePod or Apple TV as the active hub.
- Wait for Home to repopulate device state before tapping through every accessory.
- If the Home starts responding, leave the working hub active while you continue checking the rest of the setup.
Do not measure success by the first tile that wakes up. Look for the shape of recovery: rooms begin reporting, automations stop failing, Thread devices come back in clusters, or a bridge suddenly stops showing all children as offline. That pattern tells you the hub layer was the bottleneck.
Restart hubs before accessories
If forcing a different hub does not settle the Home, restart the HomePod and Apple TV hubs. Apple’s official “not responding” guidance includes restarting bridges and home hubs before the final remove-and-add step.[7] That order matters. Restarting a hub preserves the Home. Removing accessories rewrites it.
Restart the active hub first. Then restart the standby hubs, especially any HomePod or Apple TV that also updated around July 27. After each restart, give Home a few minutes to elect or reconnect a hub and refresh accessory state. Tapping every dead tile during the handoff mostly creates noise; the status screen is more useful than panic-tapping a hallway light.
If one hub consistently produces No Response and another one stabilizes the house, you have a practical workaround. It is not a confirmed Apple root cause. Keep the stable hub selected, note the software versions, and avoid deleting accessories just to make the broken hub feel useful again.
Then stabilize Thread, bridges, and manufacturer firmware
Once the hub layer has been checked, move outward. Thread and bridge devices often fail in groups, which makes them look like HomeKit itself collapsed. The fix is still not to remove them from Home first.
For Thread accessories, use Apple’s timing
Apple’s accessory troubleshooting instructions give a specific Thread recovery rule: leave the accessory unpowered for 5 minutes, then allow about 10 minutes for it to stabilize after power is restored.[7] That timing is easy to short-circuit when people are annoyed. Do not.
- Remove power from the Thread accessory for 5 minutes.
- Restore power.
- Wait about 10 minutes before judging the result.
- Check whether nearby Thread accessories recover together, which points back to mesh or hub reachability rather than a single failed device.
This step is especially relevant if the active hub changed from a Thread-capable, well-placed device to one that is worse positioned for the mesh. A Thread network can look broken from the phone while the real issue is that the coordinator path changed.
For bridges, check the vendor app before Home
Open the manufacturer’s app for the bridge or accessory family. Apple’s official sequence includes checking for firmware updates in the manufacturer app, restarting bridges, and restarting hubs.[7] If the vendor app can still see the bridge and its child devices, HomeKit may be the integration layer having trouble. If the vendor app also cannot see them, the problem is below Apple Home.
Restart the bridge after checking firmware. Then return to Home Hubs & Bridges and confirm the active hub has not quietly changed while you were working. In larger homes, that one screen deserves repeated visits; it is the closest thing Home gives you to an air-traffic-control view.
There are user-level reports of bridge-specific symptoms around this update window, including an ioBroker.yahka GitHub issue describing “Accessory out of compliance” after iOS 26.6.[8] Treat that as a lead, not a diagnosis for every mainstream HomeKit setup. If you do not use that bridge layer, do not contort your problem to match it.
The quick checks still exist; they just should not take over
Yes, Bluetooth should be on. Yes, a single misbehaving plug or bulb can be restarted. Apple also lists remove-and-add as part of the official path when other steps fail.[7] Those are real steps. They are just not the right opening move when a whole Home or a whole bridge family went No Response immediately after a multi-device Apple update day.
Use the small checks for small failures. If one lamp is dead and the rest of the home is fine, restart that lamp. If the iPhone works but Apple Watch alone shows No Response, you are probably looking at a different layer; use the watch-only HomeKit No Response guide instead. A whole-home 26.6-era failure deserves the hub ladder first.
When removing and re-adding becomes reasonable
Removing and re-adding is reasonable only after the reversible steps have failed: architecture checked, active hub identified, hub selection tested, hubs restarted, Thread timing followed, firmware checked, bridges restarted. At that point, start with one non-critical accessory. Do not delete a whole bridge or Home just to see what happens.
Pick an accessory whose loss will not damage automations or household access. Remove it, add it back, and watch whether Home behavior improves beyond that one device. If only that accessory recovers, the fix was local. If removing one device somehow causes a larger group to repopulate, document exactly what changed before touching the next device.
Do not delete the Home unless you have accepted the rebuild cost: rooms, scenes, automations, family access, bridge pairings, and accessory names. Many “it worked for me” forum fixes hide that cost because the person posting them was desperate enough to rebuild.
If the ladder does not fix it, waiting is not laziness
Apple released iOS 26.6.1 on August 17, 2026, with security fixes; coverage of that release described 29 security fixes.[9][10] That does not prove Apple fixed a HomeKit problem in 26.6.1. It does make installing the next available Apple point release a legitimate, lower-destruction choice before tearing down a working-but-unhappy Home.
If you stay stuck, preserve evidence instead of resetting everything. Save the active hub name, standby hub names, hub software versions if visible, bridge firmware versions, the exact first time No Response appeared, and whether the issue affects the whole Home, one room, one bridge family, Thread accessories, or only one control device.
The honest status remains Workaround/Investigating. User reports show people seeing HomeKit trouble after the 26.6 update window, but Apple has not publicly attributed HomeKit breakage to iOS 26.6. If the hub-first ladder restores the house, call it a workaround and keep the stable arrangement. If it does not, document the setup and wait for another Apple or vendor update before nuking the Home.
