Pixel 11 Pro vs Pixel 10 Pro as smart home controllers

The Pixel 11 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro are functionally equal as Matter controllers, Thread clients, and UWB digital-key carriers — and neither is a Thread border router. Get a per-feature Same, Changed, or Regressed verdict and a clear answer on whether the 11 Pro's $100 premium is worth it for a Google Home household.

If your Google Home household is choosing between a Pixel 11 Pro at $1,099 and a discounted Pixel 10 Pro at $999, the smart-home answer is quick: buy the Pixel 10 Pro if controller capability is the reason for the upgrade. For Matter, Thread, UWB, and Google Home remote duty, the two Pro phones land in the same place. The Pixel 11 Pro’s extra $100 buys other things — security silicon, faster wireless charging, HiLight, newer software runway, and storage changes — not a better hub path for your lights, locks, sensors, or automations.[1]

The hub correction matters more than the phone comparison

The most important line in this comparison is the least glamorous one: neither phone is a Thread border router. That means neither the Pixel 11 Pro nor the Pixel 10 Pro replaces the Thread infrastructure normally provided by a Nest Hub, Nest Wifi Pro, Google TV Streamer, or another real border-router device.

A Matter controller and a Thread border router are different jobs. The controller is the thing you use to add, name, assign, and command Matter devices. In this case, that is the Google Home app running on the phone. A Thread border router is network infrastructure: it links the low-power Thread mesh to the rest of your home network. Your phone can be a very good remote without becoming that infrastructure.

The Pixel 10 Pro family has the clearest role statement because Google confirmed to Android Authority that its Thread support is “Partial Hub functionality”: it can directly control Thread devices, but it does not act as a Thread border router, with battery power given as the practical reason.[4] For the Pixel 11 Pro, the same conclusion is a synthesis, not a separate Google quote: Google lists Thread on both phones, Google has already described the Pixel 10 Pro family’s phone-side Thread role, and Google’s public border-router hardware list has not expanded to include Pixel phones.[3][4][5]

So if your house already has a working Nest Hub 2nd gen, Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro, Google TV Streamer (4K), or another border router in the right ecosystem, either Pro phone can sit above that setup as a controller. If your house does not have a Thread border router and you want battery-powered Thread sensors, locks, buttons, or bulbs to behave like normal networked devices, buying the newer Pixel Pro does not fill that gap.

Matter controller parity is the easy part

Matter control does not make this a hard choice. Google’s own Matter support requirement is not “latest Pixel Pro.” It is an Android device running Android 8.1 or later with current Google Play services and the Google Home app path around it.[2] Both the Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 11 Pro clear that bar so comfortably that the newer phone has no meaningful protocol advantage.

That means the ordinary Google Home work is the same: adding a Matter device, assigning it to a room, controlling it from the app, and using the phone as the screen in your hand. If a Matter bulb fails to pair, or a lock disappears from a household, the likely cause is not that you chose the 10 Pro instead of the 11 Pro. You would look first at the device’s commissioning state, Google Home household permissions, the border router if Thread is involved, and the usual cloud or app-account mess.

Thread adds one more useful phone-side behavior. Google’s Android Thread support documentation describes Android devices helping connect Thread smart-home devices and storing Thread network credentials in the user’s Google Account.[10] That is helpful when you are joining devices to an existing Thread network. It still does not turn the phone into the always-on router that keeps that mesh joined to Wi-Fi while the phone is in your pocket, powered off, out of the house, or conserving battery.

UWB is also a tie, with the usual device-maker caveat

Both Pro phones have Ultra-Wideband. For smart-home-adjacent uses, that keeps the comparison level: digital car key, hands-free smart locks, precision finding, room-aware automations, and Cast handoff are all in the same phone-side bucket.[3][6]

Phone-side parity does not guarantee that your specific door lock, car, speaker, or display will behave identically. Digital car key support still depends on the automaker. Hands-free lock behavior still depends on the lock maker. Room-aware automations need the other end of the setup to know what to do with UWB distance and direction. The Pixel 11 Pro does not add a new UWB class of smart-home control over the Pixel 10 Pro; it carries the same kind of radio into the same fragmented accessory world.

What the Pixel 11 Pro premium actually buys

The 11 Pro is not empty upsell. Its strongest smart-home-adjacent argument is trust surface, not hub capability. A phone used for Google Home access, Matter credentials, digital car keys, passkeys, lock apps, and household account recovery is not just a slab with a nice camera. The move from Titan M2 to Titan M3 and Google’s quantum-safe security positioning belongs in the purchase conversation, especially for households that are already leaning on phones as keys.[7]

That security argument has a boundary. It can make the Pixel 11 Pro feel like the more future-comfortable place to keep credentials. It cannot make your Thread network route packets better, keep automations alive without a border router, or change which device acts as the Google Home controller.

The wireless charging upgrade is more concrete in daily use. A Pixel 11 Pro on a nightstand Qi2.2 charger can charge at up to 25W, compared with the Pixel 10 Pro’s Qi2 15W ceiling.[8] For a household where the phone is the bedside Google Home remote — lights, thermostat, cameras, morning routines — that is a real convenience. It is not a protocol advantage, but it may reduce the number of mornings where the household’s unofficial smart-home admin starts the day with a half-charged controller.

HiLight sits in the same category: quality-of-life hardware. In 9to5Google’s early Pixel 11 Pro hands-on, the light was described as useful during nightly voice interaction when the phone is face-down, giving a visible status cue while the phone behaves a little more like a small smart speaker.[9] That is worth liking. It is also worth keeping in its lane. A visible voice-status cue does not improve Matter compatibility, add Thread border-routing, or make UWB accessories more compatible.

The software runway is the cleanest long-term reason to pay the premium. Both phones are in the Android 17 conversation now, with the Pixel 10 series already receiving the OTA, but the Pixel 11 Pro starts a year later and therefore has the later seven-year support endpoint.[1] If you keep phones until the end of update support, that extra year may matter more than any spec-sheet radio line.

Where the Pixel 11 Pro is not a straight upgrade

The Pixel 11 Pro gives up a couple of things that make the “newer is automatically better” story too tidy. The temperature sensor is gone from the 11 Pro, while the Pixel 10 Pro has it.[3] That sensor was never the center of a reliable Google Home control strategy, but if you actually used it around the house, the new phone removes the option.

Base RAM also moves in the wrong direction on paper: 16GB on the Pixel 10 Pro base configuration versus 12GB on the Pixel 11 Pro base configuration.[1] For Google Home control, that is unlikely to decide the experience by itself. The Google Home app, Matter commissioning, UWB keys, and lock apps are not waiting for four extra gigabytes before they become usable. Still, it is a regression, and it belongs in the table rather than being waved away because the phone is newer.

Battery capacity is nearly a wash, but the official numbers technically favor the older phone: Google lists 4,870mAh for Pixel 10 Pro and 4,850mAh for Pixel 11 Pro.[3] Some third-party comparison prose around launch season has been messy on battery wording, so the official spec page is the safer source. In practical smart-home terms, a 20mAh capacity difference should not be carrying this decision.

Voice control is a separate caveat, not a Pixel 11 Pro advantage

Google Home voice control is going through its own Assistant-to-Gemini transition, and that can affect how commands feel on a phone. Treat that as a voice-layer issue, not as a Matter or Thread role difference between these two devices. If “turn off the kitchen lights” fails, the Pixel 11 Pro’s Thread hardware is not automatically the fix, and the Pixel 10 Pro’s age is not automatically the cause.

Which one to buy for the smart home

For a Google Home, Matter, Thread, and UWB household, the Pixel 10 Pro is the equal smart-home controller at the lower price. It is a Matter controller. It has Thread hardware. It has UWB. It does not act as a Thread border router, but neither does the Pixel 11 Pro.

Pay the extra $100 for the Pixel 11 Pro only if your household values the things it actually changes: Titan M3 and the newer security story, faster Qi2.2 wireless charging, HiLight as a visible bedside voice cue, the storage tier in the deal you are considering, or the extra year of update runway. Those are legitimate reasons to buy the newer phone. Better Google Home hub capability is not one of them.
