Most buyers will never hit those caps. The reason to mention them is not to make SmartThings look small; it is to keep “supports lots of devices” from becoming a substitute for planning.
Interoperability softens lock-in; it does not erase the hub decision
Matter exists to make cross-platform device support less painful, and the Connectivity Standards Alliance frames it as a standard for secure, reliable interoperability across smart-home ecosystems [16]. That is real progress. It is also where buyers sometimes over-correct and assume platform choice no longer matters.
SmartThings’ Matter documentation says Matter devices can be shared with up to five services through multi-admin [7]. That can let one supported device appear in multiple ecosystems, and SmartThings-Google import paths can reduce the pain of bringing Matter devices across apps. But multi-admin does not make a Zigbee device into a Thread device, does not give the Galaxy S26 Ultra a documented Thread radio, and does not make a phone stay home as an always-on border router.
It also does not guarantee identical behavior during outages. Local protocol, hub location, cloud dependency, and automation engine all matter when Wi-Fi, internet, or vendor cloud services misbehave.
