Which HomeKit Weather Sensor Can Trigger Your Automations?

HomeKit exposes temperature and humidity from weather sensors as automation triggers, but rain and wind data never reach it. The sensor worth buying depends on the metrics HomeKit exposes, the hub or Thread border router it requires, and whether those metrics can actually fire your automations — not on accuracy specs alone.

The best HomeKit weather sensor for home automations is the one whose readings Apple Home can actually use as triggers. In practice, that pushes the buying decision toward temperature and humidity. Rain and wind are the trap: Netatmo’s own HomeKit help page says pressure, noise, rain, and wind data are not available in HomeKit, so a rain gauge or wind module can be useful in the vendor app while still being useless as a direct Apple Home automation trigger.[1]

That means a sensor can look like a weather station, advertise outdoor conditions, and still fail the job you bought it for. Before accuracy specs, display design, or price, check three things: which metrics HomeKit sees, whether those metrics can fire an automation, and what hub or Thread border router has to be online.

The compatibility table that matters

This is the pre-purchase filter. “Works with HomeKit” is only useful when it names the exposed values and the required bridge, hub, or Thread border router. For Apple Home automation work, the ordinary product-review categories are secondary.

If you are still sorting out Apple hubs, Thread border routers, and HomeKit architecture, the broader Apple HomeKit platform overview is the better starting point. A weather sensor cannot be better than the network path that keeps it visible to Apple Home.

Eve Weather: the cleanest Apple-first outdoor pick, with one important boundary

Eve Weather is the easiest recommendation when the household is already Apple-heavy and has the right Thread border router. Eve lists it at $79.95 with IPX4 weather resistance, a CR2450 battery, and stated accuracy of ±0.3°C, ±3% relative humidity, and ±1 mbar.[2] Eve’s current product page identifies the device as Thread-based and names compatible Thread border routers including HomePod mini, Apple TV 4K 2nd/3rd generation 128GB, and HomePod 2nd generation.[2]

The Matter update made Eve Weather more broadly compatible, but it did not turn every reading into an Apple Home automation input. Coverage of the July 2024 Matter-over-Thread update notes that barometric pressure and historical data remain Eve-app-only and iOS-only.[3][4] So if the planned automation is “if pressure drops, do something,” Eve Weather does not solve that inside Apple Home.

For the more common Apple Home job — outdoor temperature or humidity crossing a useful line — Eve Weather is strong. It is tidy, local-feeling, and avoids a vendor bridge. The catch is not quality; it is scope. You are buying a HomeKit/Matter temperature and humidity source, not a full weather-station feed into Apple Home.

Netatmo is the warning label for “weather station” language

Netatmo’s Smart Weather Station is exactly the kind of product that can mislead a HomeKit automation buyer if the store page is read too quickly. It has weather-station appeal, optional rain and wind modules, and a serious environmental-monitoring posture. But Netatmo’s HomeKit support page is explicit: pressure, noise, rain, and wind data are not available in HomeKit.[1]

The same Netatmo page narrows the HomeKit automation triggers to CO2 above 1600 ppm and air-quality thresholds. Temperature and humidity can be accessed through Siri/display behavior, but Netatmo does not present them as HomeKit automation triggers on that support page.[1] That makes Netatmo a poor answer to “best HomeKit weather sensor for home automations” when the desired automations are rain, wind, outdoor temperature, or humidity based.

This does not make the Netatmo station a bad weather station. It makes it the wrong HomeKit automation purchase if the automation depends on the station’s best outdoor metrics. Aqara Temperature and Humidity Sensor: cheap, capable, and hub-bound

Aqara’s Temperature and Humidity Sensor is attractive because the price is low and the job is simple. Aqara’s US page lists it at $19.99, using Zigbee 3.0 and a Sensirion sensor element with stated accuracy of ±0.3°C and ±3% relative humidity.[5] Its customer reviews include HomeKit automation use, which matters more here than whether the app graphs are pretty.[5]

The boundary is just as explicit: Aqara says the sensor requires an Aqara hub and is “not compatible with hubs from other brands.”[5] If there is already an Aqara hub in the home, this is a sensible inexpensive temperature/humidity trigger. If not, the real price is the sensor plus accepting another hub ecosystem.

There is also a battery-detail annoyance worth catching before purchase. The Aqara US page’s marketing copy cites CR2450 and two-year battery life, while its specification table lists CR2032.[5] That inconsistency is not a reason to dismiss the device, but it is a reminder to check the exact package and support page for the version being sold.

Onvis SMS2-OD: when outdoor motion belongs in the same automation

Onvis SMS2-OD is less a pure weather sensor and more an outdoor automation sensor that happens to include temperature and humidity. A HomeKit News and Reviews review describes it as IP66 rated, HomeKit over Thread rather than Matter, with motion, temperature, and humidity, a claimed four-year battery life from two AA cells, and an operating rating down to -10°C / 14°F.[6]

That combination is useful if the automation is really about an outdoor zone: motion on the side path, humidity on a porch, temperature near a greenhouse cabinet, or a light that behaves differently when it is cold. The same review notes that the device’s light/dark sensor is not exposed to HomeKit, so it should not be bought as a HomeKit lux sensor.[6]

The operating-temperature floor matters more than it would for an indoor puck. In a climate that regularly drops below 14°F, the spec becomes an automation reliability concern, not just a line in a datasheet.

The newer indoor Thread options are climate sensors, not outdoor weather stations

The arre Temperature Sensor is a Matter-over-Thread indoor option listed at $39.99, using a CR2032 battery and adding VOC-related extras beyond simple temperature sensing.[7] It belongs in this comparison because it may look like a clean Thread answer for Apple Home owners, but it is not a rain, wind, or outdoor weather-station substitute.

Aqara’s Climate Sensor W100 is another current indoor climate option, listed at $39.99 with Thread plus Zigbee and about 2.3 years of battery life when used on Thread.[8] Its appeal is flexibility inside Aqara and Thread setups, not outdoor weather exposure.

These indoor sensors can still be good automation inputs. They can steer fans, humidifiers, thermostats, dehumidifiers, and room-specific scenes. They just should not be mistaken for backyard weather instruments, and they do not change the central HomeKit limitation around rain and wind.

Why your automation app matters after the sensor is paired

Even when Apple Home sees temperature and humidity, the native Home app may not build the rule you have in mind. HomeKit Helper documents the common workaround for temperature-range automations: create an “Any Change” trigger, then add a temperature-range condition in a more capable HomeKit app such as Home+.[9] Vendor apps such as Eve can also expose more automation-building control than Apple’s Home app in some cases.

That difference is where a lot of “it supports HomeKit” disappointment comes from. A threshold is simple: if the patio is below a chosen temperature, turn on a heater plug. A range condition is fussier: if the sensor changes and the temperature is between two values, then run the scene. The sensor has to expose the reading, and the app has to let you express the condition.

For rain, the HomeKit-native answer is still no direct rain trigger. A humidity-rise automation can be a cautious substitute for some jobs — for example, pausing a noncritical outdoor fan when humidity climbs sharply — but that is inference, not rain detection. Homebridge or DIY sensor routes may be possible for people who already maintain that kind of setup, but they sit outside a clean, verified HomeKit buying recommendation.

Specs that actually affect automations

Accuracy matters, but not in isolation. A beautifully accurate sensor placed in direct sun can still trigger the wrong scene. Reviews of Eve Weather specifically call out placement away from direct sunlight because sun exposure can skew readings.[10][11] For automation use, placement is part of compatibility: the value Apple Home receives has to describe the condition you are automating around.

  • Outdoor rating: Eve’s current official rating is IPX4, while older reviews reported different ratings such as IP65 or IPX3; use the current manufacturer spec for the model being sold.[2][10][11]
  • Temperature range: Onvis SMS2-OD is rated down to -10°C / 14°F, which may be too high a floor for exposed winter placement in colder regions.[6]
  • Battery life: manufacturer claims are useful for comparison, but frequent automations, reporting behavior, cold weather, and Thread/Zigbee conditions can change the real interval between battery swaps.
  • Hub dependency: a cheap Zigbee sensor is only cheap if the required hub is already acceptable in the home.
  • Metric exposure: pressure, history, lux, rain, or wind in a vendor app should not be assumed to exist as an Apple Home trigger.

If the project is bigger than one sensor — storm behavior, alert routing, and extreme-event monitoring — the weather-station category has different tradeoffs. This buying decision is narrower: which device can feed Apple Home automations without pretending rain and wind are available when they are not.

So which one should you buy?

Choose Eve Weather if you already have a compatible Thread border router and want a clean Apple-first outdoor temperature and humidity sensor. It is the most natural pick for HomeKit automations built around those two values, as long as you accept that pressure and history stay in the Eve app.

Choose Aqara’s Temperature and Humidity Sensor if price matters and an Aqara hub is already part of the plan. It is not the hub-free bargain some buyers imagine, but it is a practical HomeKit automation input in an Aqara household.

Consider Onvis SMS2-OD when the real job is outdoor motion plus temperature and humidity in one Thread/HomeKit device. Check the winter temperature rating before putting it somewhere exposed.

Use arre or Aqara W100 for indoor climate automations where Matter-over-Thread, Thread, or Aqara flexibility is the point. They are not substitutes for an outdoor weather station.

Avoid Netatmo if the reason you are shopping is rain- or wind-triggered HomeKit automation. Those readings may be valuable in Netatmo’s own ecosystem, but they do not arrive in HomeKit as automation inputs.
