What's the Difference Between 5G and 5GHz Wi-Fi?
5G cellular and 5GHz Wi-Fi share only the letter G: one is a carrier network generation, the other is the frequency band your router broadcasts. This explainer decodes the naming collision behind router SSIDs labeled '5G' and where the two genuinely overlap — 5G home internet.

If your phone’s Wi-Fi list shows something like “My Network - 5G,” it almost certainly does not mean your home router is using cellular 5G. In that spot, “5G” is usually sloppy shorthand for the router’s 5GHz Wi-Fi band.
That small label has caused a lot of perfectly reasonable confusion. 5G is the fifth generation of cellular technology, the successor to 4G LTE. 5GHz is a radio-frequency band used by Wi-Fi routers, alongside 2.4GHz and, on newer Wi-Fi systems, 6GHz.[1][2] Same letters, different layer of the network.

The quick test: where are you seeing “5G”?
The fastest way to decode the label is to look at where it appears.

The buying mistake hides in the third row. A 5GHz router is Wi-Fi access equipment. A 5G router is cellular modem hardware, meant to connect through a mobile network. Peplink makes that distinction plainly: a “5GHz router” is not the same thing as a “5G router.”[3]
5G cellular and 5GHz Wi-Fi are not competing versions of the same thing
Cellular 5G is a carrier network generation. Your mobile provider builds and operates it, your phone or 5G gateway connects to it, and the service runs over licensed spectrum. That is the same family of concepts as 4G LTE, not the same family as choosing a Wi-Fi network in your kitchen.[1]
5GHz Wi-Fi is a frequency band your own router can broadcast inside your home. The “GHz” part means gigahertz, a measurement of radio frequency. Home Wi-Fi commonly uses 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, and newer equipment may also use 6GHz.[2]
So when a router creates two Wi-Fi names such as “My Network” and “My Network - 5G,” it is usually trying to separate the 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi bands. That shortcut existed before consumer 5G cellular became a household term, which is why it now reads like a promise the router is not actually making.[1]
The overlap that makes the confusion legitimate: 5G home internet
There is one common household setup where both terms can be true at once: 5G home internet.
In that setup, the box from the carrier is not just a normal cable or fiber router with an unfortunate network name. It is a gateway. On the outside-facing side, it receives internet service through a cellular 5G connection. On the inside-facing side, it creates Wi-Fi for your phones, laptops, cameras, speakers, and hubs. That in-home Wi-Fi can include a 5GHz Wi-Fi network.[4]

That gives you a clean chain:
- Carrier tower to gateway: 5G cellular.
- Gateway to devices inside your home: Wi-Fi.
- One possible Wi-Fi band from that gateway: 5GHz.
This is where the label stops being merely annoying and starts affecting purchases. If you need internet service delivered over a carrier’s 5G network, buying an ordinary “5GHz Wi-Fi router” will not create that service. It will still need an internet connection from somewhere else. If the product is a “5G router” or “5G gateway,” you are now shopping for cellular-capable hardware, usually with carrier compatibility and plan requirements to check.[3]

What 5GHz Wi-Fi actually changes inside the home
Once you know the label is Wi-Fi, the practical question becomes simpler: should a device join the 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network or the 5GHz Wi-Fi network?
In general, 5GHz Wi-Fi is better for higher-speed connections close to the router, while 2.4GHz Wi-Fi tends to reach farther and handle distance better. CenturyLink and BroadbandNow both describe the tradeoff this way: 5GHz can be faster at shorter range, while 2.4GHz is often the better reach band.[5][6]

That comparison is about Wi-Fi bands only. It does not say your 5GHz Wi-Fi is faster or slower than cellular 5G, because those are different systems with different owners, coverage models, and bottlenecks.
Speed numbers are easy to misuse here. Arrow gives scale context by describing 5GHz Wi-Fi around a theoretical 1.3Gbps level with an indoor quality range of about 15 meters, while also describing 5G cellular in low-band, mid-band, and high-band forms, including low-band 5G in the 600–900MHz range at roughly 50–250Mbps and mmWave high-band in the 24–71GHz range.[4] Those figures are not a promise that your couch, phone, router, carrier, or walls will produce a particular speed. They show why the names should not be compared as if they were two settings on the same device.
Why your router may say “5G” instead of “5GHz”
Router makers and installers often shortened “5GHz” to “5G” in Wi-Fi names because, for years, the nearby alternative was usually “2.4G.” In a router admin screen or on an old sticker, that shorthand may have felt harmless. On a modern phone, sitting next to carrier ads and 5G coverage maps, it is a bad label.
How-To Geek and ATC Communications both note this naming collision: “5G Wi-Fi” in a router context refers to the 5GHz Wi-Fi band, not cellular 5G.[1][7]
If your router lets you rename networks, clearer names help. “Home WiFi 2.4GHz” and “Home WiFi 5GHz” are boring, which is exactly the point. They tell the next person in the house what they are joining without sending them into cellular settings, carrier plans, or a needless hardware search.
What to do with the label you are looking at
If “5G” appears as a Wi-Fi network name on your phone, treat it as the 5GHz band from your router. Join it when you want the higher-speed, shorter-range Wi-Fi option and your device is close enough to use it well.
If a product page says “5G router” or “5G gateway,” treat it as cellular hardware. Check carrier support, SIM or eSIM requirements, plan details, and whether the device is meant for fixed home internet, mobile backup, or travel.
If your home internet itself comes through a carrier gateway, then your smart home depends on that gateway as the WAN connection.
