Smart Home Devices Not Working? Fix Them in the Right Order

Devices offline, unresponsive, not showing in app, or failing to pair

If you searched for “smart home devices not,” I’m going to treat the missing ending as the real problem: a device stopped working, and you need to know what to touch first. The first move is not a reset. It is deciding whether the failure is actually in your house.

That distinction matters because a server-side outage can look exactly like a broken speaker, lock, plug, camera, or Home app tile. On Aug. 18, 2026, a global Google Home and Nest outage produced uniform failures across device generations; Android Authority reported that power cycling and factory resets did not resolve the problem, and that the issue was resolved the same day on the server side. Google also did not have a public Google Home status page for users to check at the time, which left plenty of people guessing in the worst possible direction. [1]

A factory reset during that kind of outage does not make the cloud come back. It only erases the local relationship between the device, the app, rooms, routines, automations, voice assistant, and sometimes the hub or bridge. If the device was merely unable to reach its service, you have traded a temporary wait for a re-setup job.

Before troubleshooting, decide whether it is local or an outage

Use a two-minute gate before you unplug anything. The point is not to diagnose every protocol in your home. It is to stop yourself from making a remote failure worse.

  • Check whether multiple homes or users are reporting the same failure. Search the vendor name plus “outage,” “down,” or the exact error message. For Google Nest issues, a same-day news item or a flood of identical reports is more useful than one old forum answer.
  • Open the manufacturer’s app, not only Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or Home Assistant. If the device is also unreachable in the manufacturer app, the problem is closer to the device, its bridge, its account, or the vendor cloud.
  • Ask whether the failure began right after a firmware update, app update, ISP change, new router, renamed Wi-Fi network, password change, power outage, or battery warning.
  • Look for pattern, not drama. One smart plug failing is different from every HomeKit accessory showing “No Response.” One dead lock is different from every cloud-dependent speaker vanishing at the same time.
  • If there is credible evidence of a vendor outage, stop at monitoring. Do not factory-reset devices just because the app looks empty or stale.

Smart-home failures are common enough that a calm sequence is justified. In an American Home Shield survey fielded in Dec. 2024 and published in May 2025, 1,006 U.S. homeowners were surveyed; roughly half reported smart-device failures. The leading reported cause was Wi-Fi or internet connectivity at 46%, followed by power outages at 33%, dead batteries at 20%, frozen screens or startup failures at 20%, setup or pairing difficulties at 19%, and app crashes or failed updates at 15%. [2]

That list is useful because it keeps the repair path small. Most failures worth trying to fix at home live in power, network, app, firmware, hub, or pairing territory. The annoyance is real, too: TechSee’s 2019 Smart Home Support Survey Report found troubleshooting was the hardest smart-home task for consumers at 22%, ahead of syncing with other devices at 15% and app syncing at 11%. The fix ladder, from least destructive to most destructive

Once you have no good reason to suspect a cloud outage, work upward. This order is a practical synthesis of common troubleshooting sequences from CNET, Asurion, Apple, Google, and How-To Geek, not a single vendor’s official universal process. CNET’s smart-home troubleshooting guide emphasizes simple “cure-all” moves such as restarting, checking apps, and looking for updates, while Asurion’s guide explicitly puts updating the device and router, restarting the router unplugged for 30 seconds, restarting the device, moving closer, and then considering mesh in its network-oriented sequence. [4][5]

1. Restart without erasing

Start with the parts that can be restarted without losing configuration: the smart-home app, the phone or tablet running it, the device, and then the router. Close and reopen the app first. If the app is frozen, signed out, or showing stale status, the device may not be the culprit.

Then power-cycle the device. For a plug or bulb, turn off power long enough for it to actually drop off and boot again. For a camera, speaker, display, bridge, or lock, use the manufacturer’s normal restart or remove power if that is the recommended safe option. Do not hold a reset pin unless you have confirmed that a short press means restart rather than reset; on some devices, the difference between a restart and a wipe is only a few seconds.

Restart the router after the device and app checks, especially when several Wi-Fi devices are affected. Asurion’s consumer troubleshooting guide recommends unplugging the router for 30 seconds as part of its common smart-home connectivity sequence. [5] If someone in the home is on a work call, warn them first. A correct fix that takes down the house at the wrong moment is still bad troubleshooting.

2. Check firmware and app updates, including the boring hidden ones

Update the control app before chasing deeper causes. Then check device firmware in the manufacturer’s app, not only in your main smart-home dashboard. CNET notes that new smart devices can need several background firmware updates before all features work, and that apps do not always make those updates obvious. [4]

This is one of the easier failure modes to misread. A newly installed device may appear flaky, incomplete, or half-paired while it is still fetching updates. If you reset it mid-update, you may simply force it to start over or leave yourself with an even less clear setup state.

Bridges and hubs deserve their own update check. How-To Geek notes, for example, that some bridges such as Hue can be excluded from auto-update behavior and need manual firmware checks. [6] If one bridge feeds a room full of bulbs or sensors, outdated bridge firmware can masquerade as a dozen separate device failures.

3. Prove the device has power before you diagnose the network

A dead battery does not care how carefully you tune Wi-Fi. Check batteries, charging contacts, USB cables, outlets, switched outlets, GFCI outlets, breakers, and wall switches. Smart bulbs are especially good at being “broken” because someone used the old wall switch. Smart locks are good at waiting until the least convenient hallway moment to reveal weak batteries.

After a power outage, give hubs, routers, access points, and bridges time to boot before judging the device. A sensor may be fine while the bridge it talks to is still coming back. A camera may be online before the app cloud catches up. The American Home Shield survey’s 33% power-outage figure is a reminder that “not responding” often starts with something less mysterious than a bad device. [2]

4. Treat Wi-Fi and router changes as prime suspects

Wi-Fi and internet connectivity led the American Home Shield failure causes at 46%, so it earns attention early. [2] But “Wi-Fi problem” should not become a junk drawer for everything. Be specific: did the router move, did the ISP change, did the network name change, did the password change, did a mesh node go offline, or did the device move farther from the access point?

If you changed the Wi-Fi name, password, or provider, do not waste time treating the smart device as randomly broken. Google’s Home and Nest Help says that after a Wi-Fi name, password, or provider change, the fix for a disconnected Google Nest or Home device is to set up the device again in the Google Home app. [7]

That principle applies more broadly: many smart devices remember one network identity. Change that identity and the device may be doing exactly what it was configured to do — looking for a network that no longer exists. In that case, setup is not punishment. It is how you give the device the new address of the house.

Distance still matters. If a plug works next to the router but not in the garage, you have learned something useful. If a camera fails only after being moved outdoors, look at signal strength, walls, metal doors, and the nearest mesh node before blaming the camera. 5. When many devices fail, inspect the shared hub or bridge

A single device failing points to that device, its power, its placement, or its account. Many devices failing at once points to a shared layer: router, internet, smart-home platform, home hub, Thread border router, Zigbee bridge, Matter controller, or vendor cloud. You do not need a lecture on every protocol to make the next move. You need to find the common piece.

Apple’s support document for HomeKit or Matter accessories that are not responding in the Home app, published Mar. 03, 2026, recommends steps such as making sure Bluetooth is on, restarting the accessory, checking the manufacturer app for firmware updates, restarting bridges and all home hubs, disconnecting Thread accessories from power for 5 minutes, waiting 10 minutes for a Thread network to stabilize, and then removing and re-adding the accessory if needed. Apple also points to same-network checks and VPN or security-software checks when accessories from multiple manufacturers fail. This is vendor-recommended procedure, not an independently reproduced confirmation that the same steps fix every Home app failure. [8]

How-To Geek makes the same practical point for HomeKit: when multiple HomeKit devices stop responding, the home hub is usually the place to look, and Apple auto-assigns the active hub rather than letting users pin one permanently. [6] That is irritating, but it also gives you a cleaner test: restart the likely hubs and bridges before removing a dozen accessories one by one.

6. Forget and re-add only the device that needs it

If power, firmware, network, app, and hub checks do not bring back one device, remove that device from the controlling app and add it back. This is not the same as factory-resetting it. Removing or forgetting usually breaks the app’s relationship to the device. A factory reset wipes the device’s own stored setup.

Do this narrowly. If one plug is bad, do not remove the room. If one bulb is stuck, do not delete the bridge. If one lock is unreachable, think very carefully before doing anything that could erase access codes or automations. The goal is to rebuild the smallest broken relationship.

Apple’s Home app path also puts remove-and-re-add late in the sequence, after accessory restarts, firmware checks, bridge and hub restarts, and Thread stabilization steps. [8] That ordering is the part to copy, even outside Apple’s ecosystem: re-add after you have checked the less destructive layers.

7. Re-pair when the device has lost its relationship to the network or hub

Re-pairing is justified when the device is powered, close enough to communicate, not caught in a known outage, visible enough to enter setup mode, but still cannot reconnect to its app, Wi-Fi network, bridge, or controller. This often follows a router change, bridge replacement, failed setup, or a device that was removed from an app.

Follow the manufacturer’s setup instructions exactly here. Pairing modes are not standardized in a way that saves you from reading the small print. A light pattern, button hold, QR code, setup code, Bluetooth permission, or temporary Wi-Fi network can be the difference between a clean re-pair and another half-configured device.

If the device depends on a bridge, put the bridge in the correct add-device mode first. If it uses a phone for setup, turn on the permissions the setup flow asks for, then turn off any VPN or security software only if the vendor procedure requires it and you are comfortable doing so. Apple’s support page specifically calls out VPN and security-software checks in multi-manufacturer Home failures, again as vendor-recommended procedure. [8]

When a factory reset is finally justified

A factory reset belongs near the end because it changes the problem. Before the reset, you may have had a device that could not be reached. After the reset, you have a device that must be set up again, reattached to rooms and automations, and sometimes removed from old accounts or bridges before it can be claimed cleanly.

Use it when the local evidence is strong:

  • There is no credible vendor outage or platform-wide incident.
  • The device has stable power or fresh batteries.
  • The router, Wi-Fi, app, phone, bridge, and hub layers have been restarted or checked.
  • Firmware and app updates have been checked in the manufacturer’s app.
  • A network name, password, or provider change has already been handled through setup rather than guessed at.
  • Forget-and-readd or normal re-pairing failed.
  • You have the setup code, QR code, account login, bridge access, and physical access needed to add the device again.

Do not factory-reset because the app is slow after an update. Do not factory-reset because ten devices failed at once before checking the hub or cloud. Do not factory-reset a lock, alarm component, camera, or bridge until you know what access, recordings, codes, automations, or child devices may be affected.

If a documented outage or bad update regression is underway, wait and monitor. If the failure is local, climb the ladder: restart, update, check power, check Wi-Fi, check hubs, forget and re-add, then re-pair. If the device still cannot be reached after those checks, a factory reset is no longer panic-tapping. It is the last reasonable local fix.
