The reported setup is a strong El Niño signal, with coverage citing a greater than 90% chance of a very strong El Niño and about a 69% chance of a historic RONI value of at least 2.5°C, alongside a CPC winter map favoring above-normal temperatures across the northern tier and above-normal precipitation across the southern tier and up the East Coast.[1][2]

That split is enough to build a schedule, but not enough to predict a Tuesday storm. Use the seasonal outlook for your default program; use the short-range forecast for temporary holds.

Why the stormy south gets the gentler schedule

The CPC layer reported on Aug. 20 favors above-normal precipitation across the southern tier, and the Farmers’ Almanac winter forecast also emphasizes a wet southern storm track.[1][4][5] That does not mean every southern home will be cold all winter. It means your thermostat should not assume that the cheapest hour is always the hour with the deepest setback.

A southern heat pump trying to recover from 60°F to 68°F during a cold rain or borderline ice setup can leave the person waking up cold while the system catches up. The safer recipe is a 3-4°F setback most days, then a temporary hold near comfort when the short-range forecast shows freezing rain, sleet, wet snow, or a long cold rain. That is less dramatic than the national 7-10°F idea, but it is easier to live with in volatile storm weeks.

Why the northern tier can use a deeper setback

The same reported CPC layer favors above-normal temperatures across the northern tier, while the Farmers’ Almanac describes near-normal northern temperatures with quick cold snaps.[1][4] That combination points to a thermostat schedule that saves during ordinary stretches but refuses to be surprised by recovery time.

In practice, the northern recipe lets the home drop closer to 60-62°F while people are asleep or away. The important part is not the low number by itself; it is the return path. If the household wakes at 6:30 a.m., the thermostat should be allowed to start recovery before 6:30, not begin thinking about heat at 6:30 while someone is standing in the kitchen in socks.

The Northeast and Mid-Atlantic should not force one forecast to win

This is the awkward region, and the awkwardness is useful. The Farmers’ Almanac calls out “tricky” Northeast winter weather, including rain-versus-sleet-versus-wet-snow concerns in January and February.[4] The Old Farmer’s Almanac Atlantic Corridor summary, as reported by Shore Daily News, points warmer than normal overall, with the coldest periods in early to mid-December, early to mid-January, and early and late February.[6]

Those signals do not collapse into one clean instruction. So the schedule should not pretend they do. Start with the moderate 62-64°F setback. When the forecast is mild and wet, keep it. When a mixed-precip event is inside the short-range window, move to the stormy-south pattern for that event. When a sharp dry cold snap is coming, move to the northern-tier pattern with earlier recovery.

The Northwest needs local routing more than national bravado

The available winter outlooks are more actionable for the southern tier, northern tier, Great Lakes, and Atlantic side than for every Northwest microclimate. That is not a reason to skip programming; it is a reason to avoid overfitting. A damp coastal home should usually start with 62-64°F setbacks. A colder inland or mountain-adjacent home can use the 60-62°F northern-style setback if recovery is reliable.

For the Northwest, the short-range override does more work. If wind, ice, heavy mountain snow, or a hard freeze is actually on the local forecast, suspend the deepest setback until the event passes.

How to enter the recipe in Nest, ecobee, and Honeywell Home

Do not make three different weather strategies for three thermostat brands. Make one regional schedule, then translate the four periods into the app’s language.

Nest

In Nest, enter the four temperatures as scheduled temperature changes or presets, depending on your model and app setup. Google’s Nest support documentation describes using temperature schedules and presets to control when the thermostat changes setpoints.[7] For this recipe, the mapping is simple: Wake = morning comfort, Away = daytime setback, Evening = comfort, Sleep = overnight setback.

For the northern-tier and colder-inland Northwest recipes, check the first few cold mornings. If the home is still below target at wake time, move the wake temperature change earlier or use the thermostat’s learning/recovery behavior rather than lowering the sleep setpoint further.

ecobee

In ecobee, build the same pattern with comfort settings and the weekly schedule: Home or Wake at 68°F, Away at the regional setback, Home/Evening at 68°F, and Sleep at the regional overnight setback. ecobee describes Smart Recovery as a feature that starts heating or cooling before a scheduled change so the home reaches the desired temperature at the scheduled time.[8]

That makes ecobee especially well suited to the northern-tier version. Set the desired wake time as the time you want the house comfortable, not the time you want the furnace or heat pump to start.

Honeywell Home

For Honeywell Home models that use named schedule periods, map the recipe directly: Wake to 68°F, Leave or Away to the regional daytime setback, Return or Evening to 68°F, and Sleep to the regional overnight setback. If your model separates weekdays and weekends, keep the same temperatures and only change the times.

If the thermostat does not have a recovery feature you trust, fake one with time. For a 6:30 a.m. wake target, schedule the 68°F change earlier on cold-snap mornings. For a 5:00 p.m. return, start recovery before people walk in, especially in homes that recover slowly.

The short-range override that keeps the schedule honest

A three-month outlook can guide the default. It cannot tell your thermostat that freezing rain will start before the school pickup, or that the coldest night of the week will land during a trip. That is why the override is part of the recipe, not a bonus setting.
