On a Google Nest thermostat, the practical version is Eco Temperatures. Google’s help documentation says Nest Eco Temperature cooling settings can be set between 76°F and 90°F, so an 80–85°F away recipe is not a workaround; it fits the supported range. Platform menus and app paths do change, so treat that as a checked-at-writing platform fact, not a permanent promise about every firmware screen. [5]

For sleep, schedule the bedroom hours instead of waiting until the room already feels sticky. A 74–78°F sleep range gives you room to choose the warmest setting that still lets people rest. If 76°F works, there is no prize for forcing 74°F. If someone in the house needs a cooler room to sleep safely, that is a comfort and health condition, not a moral failure of energy discipline.

Pre-cool before comfort matters

Pre-cooling is the civilized alternative to coming home, feeling the warm air, and hammering the setpoint downward. If the house should be 78°F at 5:30 p.m., the thermostat needs permission to start earlier. Why 68°F will not cool the house faster

For a typical central air conditioner, a much lower setpoint does not make the supply air dramatically colder or make the house cool at double speed; it mostly tells the equipment to keep running toward a target it may not be able to reach in that weather. The plain field rule is the 20-degree guideline. During extreme heat, many air-conditioning systems are commonly expected to cool indoor air about 20°F below the outdoor temperature. On a 100°F afternoon, that puts the realistic indoor floor near 80°F for many homes, especially during the hottest part of the day. WRDW’s heat-wave thermostat guidance uses that 20-degree framing, and The Spruce’s HVAC-pro interviews describe it as a useful industry guideline rather than a hard law. [8][9]

That last caveat matters. The 20-degree guideline is not a promise that every house will sit neatly at 80°F when it is 100°F outside. Insulation, humidity, direct sun, attic heat, window exposure, duct location, air leakage, and system sizing all change the result. A well-shaded, well-insulated house may do better. A leaky house with brutal afternoon sun may struggle above 80°F even while the air conditioner is doing real work.

This is the calming part of the recipe: if the thermostat says 75°F, the room says 80°F, and the outdoor temperature is 100°F, the thermostat may not be ignoring you. The system may already be running flat out. Lowering the target to 68°F changes the demand on paper, not the physics of the house.

Where savings fit, and where they do not

There is a real savings reason to avoid unnecessarily low settings.   6. Lock or limit casual overrides if the household keeps canceling the schedule during the hottest hour of the day.

The lockout point is not about winning a thermostat argument. It is about preventing the worst heat-wave habit: changing the target every time the indoor number looks disappointing. A smart thermostat cannot make an undersized or overworked air conditioner behave like a larger one, but it can stop the household from adding noise to the system’s hardest hours.

When to stop adjusting and start troubleshooting

Give the recipe time to work. A house that was allowed to climb into the mid-80s may not snap back in an hour when the outdoor temperature is still near 100°F. Pre-cooling and a reasonable occupied target are meant to avoid that hole, not magically erase it.

The decision boundary is this: use the highest safe comfortable setpoint, automate the away and sleep changes, and remember that lower does not mean faster.
