Smart Thermostat and Air Monitor Tips for a Heat Advisory

A heat advisory makes cooling and indoor air quality one problem: closed windows hold cool air in but trap CO2, VOCs, and smoke. Get the exact thermostat and air-quality-monitor settings to run as a coordinated system, set in the right order, with dated, status-labeled verification.

A heat advisory turns the thermostat and the air-quality monitor into one control system. Closing the house helps the air conditioner hold temperature, but it can also trap CO2, VOCs, fine particles, and wildfire smoke that sneaks in through leaks, ducts, or a bad portable-AC setup. The CDC’s HeatRisk guidance is useful here because it puts heat risk and outdoor AQI in the same decision frame instead of treating them as separate chores on separate apps.[1]

The point is not to find one heroic setting. It is to set the cooling baseline, block dirty outdoor air when needed, run filtration deliberately, and let the indoor monitor tell you when the house is no longer both cool and breathable.

Use this order first. The status labels mean: Confirmed = source-documented and safe to use as a starting point; Workaround = depends on your HVAC equipment, filter, or installation; Investigating = vendor-stated, snippet-verified, or app-path-sensitive enough that you should re-check it on your own device before relying on it. No firmware or app build is asserted here, because those paths move faster than heat-season advice does.

Set the thermostat first, then let the air monitor veto the plan

The familiar 78°F advice is a starting position, not a duty to suffer. Consumer Reports, citing DOE guidance, describes the efficient cooling target as the highest comfortable setpoint, often around 78°F, with higher offsets while asleep or away; it also gives the rough utility-bill rule of about 3% savings per degree on central AC.[2] ENERGY STAR’s smart-thermostat certification floor is a different measurement: certified models must show at least 8% heating runtime reduction and 10% cooling runtime reduction, averaging about 8% of HVAC bills or roughly $50 per year.[3]

That energy context matters, but it is not the whole heat-advisory job. During a smoke episode or stagnant-air day, a thermostat-only routine can look successful while the monitor is telling you that the sealed house is loading up with particles, VOCs, or CO2. If all you need is the basic cooling setpoint and schedule routine, use the thermostat-only baseline. For this scenario, the thermostat setpoint comes first because it determines how hard the equipment runs; the air monitor comes next because it tells you whether the sealed-house strategy is still acceptable.

Nest Airwave: useful residual cooling, only under the right humidity condition

Nest Airwave is worth leaving on in the right climate because it is not pretending to be ventilation. Google describes Airwave as shutting the compressor off before the target temperature is fully reached, then using the fan for about 5 to 10 minutes to move residual cooling off the coil. The important condition is indoor humidity: Google says Airwave turns on only when indoor humidity is low enough for that fan-only cooling to make sense.[4]

Operational label: Confirmed for supported Nest thermostats, rechecked against Google’s public help on August 25, 2026. In the Nest app and Google Home app, the exact path can differ by device generation, but the switch is the Airwave/Nest Sense cooling feature. If your air monitor shows worsening PM2.5 or VOC trend, Airwave is not the thing to disable first; it does not bring in outdoor air by itself. Look at outdoor-air intake, leaky portable ACs, fan mode, and filtration before blaming the residual-cooling feature.

ecobee precooling: good load-shifting tool, not an IAQ tool

ecobee’s eco+ Time of Use feature can precool before expensive periods, and ecobee cites a summer 2020 study claiming up to 23% more cooling-cost savings for that Time of Use precooling behavior.[5] Treat that as a vendor claim. It may be valuable if your rate plan punishes afternoon runtime, but it does not filter smoke, lower CO2, or decide when outdoor air is safe. Operational label: Investigating for the savings number because it is ecobee-stated; usable as a control tactic if you have confirmed eco+ Time of Use is enabled, the home is occupied by people who can tolerate the earlier cooling, and the air monitor does not show that the house is becoming a sealed, stale box. If you are away, ecobee’s vacation temperature limits are a comfort-and-equipment boundary, not permission to ignore an occupied clean room or a pet-safe zone.[5]

Fan On, Circulate, and Auto are not interchangeable during smoke

Fan Auto is the normal cooling default: the blower runs when the system is actively heating or cooling. That saves blower energy and avoids moving air through a weak filter for no reason. During smoke, the calculation changes. If the central system has a tight, appropriately installed high-efficiency filter — commonly MERV 13 or better where the equipment can tolerate it — running the fan longer can turn the ducted system into a whole-home filtration loop. EPA wildfire guidance supports using high-efficiency filtration and keeping smoke out of the home.[7]

The conflict is that longer fan runtime costs energy and only helps if the filter is actually doing the work. Resideo recommends setting the fan to On during peak wildfire-smoke conditions so air keeps passing through the HVAC filter.[8] Lennox, by contrast, presents Circulate as a lower-energy mode that cycles air periodically rather than running the blower continuously.[9] Those are not contradictory once you put severity and filter readiness back into the decision.

This is also where single-hose portable AC units deserve suspicion. A single-hose unit exhausts indoor air outdoors, which can pull replacement air in through cracks and gaps. During wildfire smoke, that can worsen smoke intrusion instead of solving heat. Airthings explicitly warns against running single-hose portable ACs in smoky conditions, and it also points to keeping windows and doors closed while filtering indoor air.[10]

A 2025 Indoor Environments simulation gives a useful sense of why coordinated thermostat-and-AQI control is not a gimmick. In about 5,000 California homes modeled during the 2020 wildfire season, automated thermostat optimization tied to outdoor AQI reduced modeled indoor PM2.5 exposure by up to 54±5%, and by 61±5% on peak smoke days, at about $5 per month in added energy. The same study found that a central system with adequate filtration could be about as effective as four portable air cleaners in the modeled cases.[11] That is not a promise for your filter rack, duct leakage, or blower motor. It is evidence that the control sequence is serious enough to deserve more care than “turn the fan on.”

Lock out outdoor air before you try to ventilate your way out

If your system has an ERV, HRV, fresh-air damper, economizer, or ventilating dehumidifier, find its outdoor-air control before the heat event, not while the monitor is already flashing amber. In ordinary weather, ventilation helps dilute indoor pollutants. In heat plus smoke, it can import the problem you are trying to avoid. EPA’s heat and wildfire IAQ guidance emphasizes keeping smoke out, closing windows and doors, and using filtration when smoke affects the area.[6][7]

Operational label: Workaround. Some thermostats expose ventilation under equipment settings; some ERV/HRV systems have their own wall control; some fresh-air dampers are wired to a furnace board or separate controller. The correct heat-smoke move is to disable outdoor-air intake when outdoor AQI is harmful, then re-enable it only after outdoor conditions are acceptable and the system path is verified.

The safe ventilation window is narrower than most advice admits: outdoor air should be cooler than indoors and outdoor AQI should be acceptable. In practice, that usually means a short overnight or early-morning window, and only when the monitor confirms that opening up is improving the indoor problem rather than trading VOCs for particles. Airthings and Resideo both frame wildfire-smoke protection around keeping smoke out and filtering indoor air, while the American Lung Association’s heat guidance also points to night or early-morning cooling tactics when outdoor conditions allow them.[8][10][12]

Read the IAQ monitor as a trend, then choose cooling, filtering, or retreat

A standalone monitor — Airthings, IQAir, Eve Room, or another unit with the right sensors — changes the decision from “is the AC running?” to “which problem is now winning?” An ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium can also surface indoor air-quality signals, but the same rule applies: use the reading to decide an action, not to decorate the wall.

  • Indoor temperature is climbing while PM/VOC/CO2 is stable: prioritize cooling. Lower the setpoint, close blinds, reduce internal heat, and use the 110-degree cooling runbook for load-reduction moves.
  • PM2.5 trend is rising while outdoor AQI is bad: keep windows shut, lock out outdoor air, run central filtration if the filter is ready, and start a HEPA purifier.
  • CO2 or VOC trend is rising while outdoor AQI is acceptable and cooler air is available: ventilate briefly, then close back up before heat or AQI turns against you.
  • CO2 or VOC trend is rising while outdoor AQI is bad: do not reflexively open windows. Move people to the filtered room, reduce indoor sources, and wait for a cleaner outdoor-air window.
  • The monitor jumps suddenly after being moved, charged, cleaned, or placed near a vent: verify placement and sensor behavior before treating one spike as the house condition. Use the monitor-accuracy guides for environment-versus-sensor troubleshooting and PM2.5 monitor accuracy context.

The monitor is especially useful after you change fan mode. If Fan On with a good filter makes PM readings flatten or drop while the thermostat still holds temperature, keep it for the smoke period and accept the energy cost. If readings do not improve, the fan may be circulating through a bypassing filter, a dirty filter, or leaky ductwork. At that point, running the blower harder is noise and electricity, not proof of filtration.

Know when fan-based comfort stops being heat safety

Fan-only cooling has a hard limit. The CDC warns that at the magenta HeatRisk level, fans do not prevent heat illness once indoor temperatures climb into the mid-90s, and that fans should be relied on only when indoor temperatures are below about 90°F.[1] That matters because smoke advice often says “run the fan,” while heat advice often says “use fans to feel cooler.” Those are different fans doing different jobs under different risk limits.

If the AC is failing, the home is drifting toward unsafe indoor temperatures, or a vulnerable person is in the house, do not keep experimenting with Circulate versus On. Move to the coolest filtered room you can control, contact local cooling resources if needed, and treat the thermostat as a failing safety system rather than an optimization puzzle.

Set up the HEPA clean room before the main house loses the argument

A clean room is not a lifestyle upgrade; it is the fallback when whole-home cooling and whole-home IAQ cannot both be maintained. Pick one room with a door, minimal leakage, window coverings, a HEPA purifier sized for that room, and the air-quality monitor placed where people actually breathe. EPA wildfire guidance supports creating a cleaner indoor space and using portable air cleaners during smoke events.[7]

  • Close the clean-room door and windows before outdoor smoke arrives if you can.
  • Run the HEPA purifier continuously during the smoke period; do not cycle it by smell.
  • Keep the monitor in the room, away from the purifier outlet and away from a supply register.
  • Use the central system for cooling if it does not pull in outdoor smoke; use room cooling only if it does not create negative pressure or outdoor-air draw.

Do not confuse this with smoke alarms or safety alarms. IAQ monitors and PM sensors are trend instruments; smoke alarms are life-safety alarms. The verification loop after you change settings

After the thermostat, fan, ventilation, and purifier settings are changed, give the system enough time to show a direction. Then check five things in this order: indoor temperature, indoor air-quality trend, outdoor AQI, filter status, and whether any app path or status label in this recipe still matches your device in Q3 2026.

  1. Indoor temperature: is the occupied space staying below your household’s safety limit, not merely hitting an energy target?
  2. IAQ trend: did PM2.5, VOC, or CO2 improve, flatten, or worsen after the last control change?
  3. Outdoor AQI: is it clean enough and cool enough to justify any ventilation, or should outdoor-air intake remain locked out?
  4. Filter status: is the HVAC filter upgraded, seated, and not overdue; is the HEPA purifier running continuously in the fallback room?
  5. Status label: is the setting Confirmed on your actual thermostat and app, a Workaround tied to your equipment, or still Investigating because it rests on a vendor claim or moved menu path?

If one check fails, do not average it away. A cool house with rising smoke particles is not solved. A clean room that is overheating is not solved. The working setup is the one that holds both readings in the acceptable direction at the same time.
