Belkin shut down Wemo cloud services on January 31, 2026. That date has passed. If you are reading this in June 2026, the Wemo app is dead, remote access is gone, and Alexa and Google Assistant no longer talk to any Wi-Fi Wemo plug. The only exceptions are a handful of plugs that were already set up in Apple HomeKit before that date—and even those can never be reconfigured or added fresh if they are ever factory-reset or moved to a new home.

This isn’t a future risk. It is the current state of every Wi-Fi Wemo plug ever sold. I have been watching smart home products become e-waste after cloud shutdowns for years, and the Wemo case is one of the cleanest examples of why you should never buy a smart plug that depends on a company’s server to turn on and off.

What Actually Broke on January 31

The shutdown wasn’t a phased sunset. On January 31, the Wemo app stopped working. Cloud-based features—remote access, voice control via Alexa and Google Assistant, schedules that relied on the cloud—all stopped. The Belkin support page says it plainly: “After January 31, 2026, the Wemo app and all cloud-based features (remote access, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant) no longer function for affected products.”

The detail most people miss: new setup or reconfiguration with Apple HomeKit is no longer possible. Even if you had a Wemo plug in HomeKit before the shutdown, if you factory-reset it or move it to a new home, it cannot be added back. The plug is bricked for any new use. Only plugs that were already configured in HomeKit and never reset continue to work locally through the Apple Home app.

If you own a working Wi-Fi Wemo plug today, do not reset it. If you do, it becomes a paperweight. There is no way to set it up again, even with HomeKit.

The Four Wi-Fi Models – and What Happened to Each

Four Wi-Fi models were affected: the WSP080 (Mini Smart Plug), the F7C063 (older Mini Smart Plug), the F7C029 (Insight Smart Plug with energy monitoring), and the WSP090 (Outdoor Plug). Only three of them support HomeKit in the first place. The Insight does not—and never did.
