Can the Realme P4s 5G Control Your Smart Home?

The realme P4s 5G can control IR appliances, Google Home Matter-over-Wi-Fi devices, and realme Link gear out of the box, but its missing NFC and Thread radios block Matter 1.6 tap-to-commission and direct Thread control. Before spending ₹34,999–₹41,999 on the realme P4s 5G, the useful question is not whether it offers “smart home control,” but which parts of an existing home it can actually reach. As of its India launch on August 26, 2026, the answer depends on the route: an infrared command to an older air conditioner is fundamentally different from a Google Home command to a Matter device, while a Thread accessory introduces a hub that the phone cannot replace.[1]

The following verdict separates confirmed hardware from behavior inferred through platform requirements. No independent launch-day test has yet reproduced the P4s controlling IR appliances, Google Home devices, or realme Link products.

“Confirmed” in this table does not mean every appliance or accessory will work. It means the relevant hardware is consistently documented. “Investigating” marks a route that remains unverified on a retail P4s, even where the underlying Android platform should support it. “Workaround” means control remains possible, but not by the direct method a buyer might expect.

Google Home works differently for Wi-Fi and Thread devices

The P4s launches with Android 16 and realme UI 7.0.[1][2] Google’s published Matter-controller requirements call for Android 8.1 or later, Google Play services 22.48.14 or later, Bluetooth Low Energy 4.2 or later, and Wi-Fi connectivity.[4] On paper, the P4s clears that controller threshold.

For a Matter-over-Wi-Fi bulb, plug or similar accessory, the expected setup path is straightforward: open Google Home, start device setup, scan the Matter QR code, and let the phone use Bluetooth during discovery before placing the accessory on the home Wi-Fi network. Subsequent local commands travel through the network rather than through a dedicated smart-home radio in the phone.

That is platform compatibility, not proof of realme-specific execution. realme has not published a phone-level Matter-controller certification for the P4s, and no launch-day review has documented the complete process with a Matter accessory. The sensible pre-purchase conclusion is that Google Home Matter-over-Wi-Fi control should be available under Google’s stated requirements, while the exact P4s workflow remains to be reproduced.

Thread changes the network architecture. A Matter-over-Thread sensor or plug does not join an ordinary Wi-Fi network. It needs a Thread Border Router to bridge its low-power Thread network to the rest of the home. Google consequently requires a compatible Matter hub for Thread devices; its support documentation also identifies a hub as necessary for remote access when the user is away from home.[4]

Because the P4s does not contain a Thread radio, it cannot act as that border router. The Google Home app may still be the interface used to add and operate the accessory, but a compatible hub must sit between the phone and the Thread network. Buyers who already have the appropriate Google Home hub infrastructure may notice little difference in everyday use. Buyers starting with only the phone and a Thread accessory will be missing a required component.

The listed Wi-Fi 5 connection does not itself exclude Matter-over-Wi-Fi products.[2][3] It is an older Wi-Fi generation at this price, but the more consequential smart-home limitation is the missing Thread hardware. A faster conventional Wi-Fi specification would not turn the phone into a Thread Border Router.

No NFC means scanning instead of tapping

The P4s specification table lists NFC as unavailable.[3] That omission now affects more than contactless payments: Matter 1.6 introduced an NFC commissioning route in which a user can hold a phone close to a compatible accessory to begin setup. The Connectivity Standards Alliance announced that Matter 1.6 capability on June 17, 2026.[5]

A P4s cannot initiate that NFC tap-to-commission exchange. This does not make the same Matter device unusable. In Google Home, the fallback is to scan the accessory’s Matter QR code with the camera or enter its numeric setup code manually.[4] Bluetooth and Wi-Fi then carry the relevant discovery and network-setup stages.

The practical cost is concentrated at commissioning. A clearly printed, accessible QR code may make the difference trivial. It becomes more irritating when the code is on the back of an installed switch, underneath an appliance, or only preserved in packaging. Anyone choosing the P4s should retain setup labels and manual codes rather than assuming NFC can recover a misplaced commissioning path.

The IR blaster is tangible hardware, but the remote experience is untested

Gadgets360 includes an infrared blaster in the P4s sensor list, 91mobiles lists it in the phone’s specifications, and Smartprix includes it under connectivity.[1][2][3] Agreement among three independent specification trackers makes IR the most firmly documented smart-home feature on the phone.

That hardware could immediately matter in a mixed household. Infrared control does not require a smart television, cloud account or Wi-Fi connection: the phone sends the same kind of line-of-sight signal as a conventional remote. It is therefore the relevant route for an older AC, TV or set-top box that has no Google Home or Matter support.

What remains unknown is the quality of the P4s implementation. The launch-day Gadgets360 review does not test the IR blaster.[6] realme’s support page describes an IR Remote app workflow, but the page is JavaScript-rendered and its available wording was obtained through search snippets rather than a complete live document.[7]

A proper hands-on check needs to confirm that the retail software includes the app, identify which appliance categories and brands are offered, complete profile matching, and reproduce power, temperature, input and channel commands where applicable. Until then, the hardware deserves a Confirmed label while appliance control remains Investigating. An IR emitter alone cannot guarantee that the app contains a working profile for a particular model.

Products in realme’s own smart-home range are managed through the realme Link app rather than through the IR blaster. realme support material also documents account linking for Google Assistant and Alexa control.[8] That means a compatible bulb, switch or camera may be operated in realme Link and exposed to a voice-assistant ecosystem, subject to the product’s own network and regional support.

This path receives an Investigating label because the relevant realme support document is only partially crawlable and needs live re-verification before purchase or publication. There is also no launch-day P4s test showing sign-in, device discovery, control, or Google Assistant account linking. Nothing in the available sources indicates that the phone includes a separate, P4s-exclusive smart-home layer.

The preceding P4 Pro provides limited corroborating context rather than proof: Smartprix’s long-term review records the same broad combination of an IR blaster and no NFC.[9] The P4s still has to be judged from its own retail hardware and software, particularly because neither model’s specification pattern demonstrates successful control of a particular appliance.

What the checkout decision comes down to

For a home containing older IR appliances, Google Home Matter-over-Wi-Fi products and realme Link gear, the P4s has credible control routes. The IR emitter is confirmed in multiple specifications, Android 16 meets Google’s published Matter-controller baseline, and realme documents a Link-to-assistant path. The first two software experiences and the realme Link documentation still require P4s-specific or live verification.

It is not a self-sufficient controller for every Matter setup. Thread accessories require a separate hub with a Thread Border Router, while Matter 1.6 NFC commissioning is unavailable and must give way to QR scanning or manual code entry. Those conditions should be included in the purchase cost and setup plan, rather than discovered after the phone’s return window closes.

This compatibility verdict is fixed to the August 26, 2026 launch-day evidence. Reproduced IR commands, a live re-check of realme’s support documents, or a successful P4s-specific Google Home setup could later promote—or demote—the relevant entries under the exact category slug compatibility.
