Does the iPhone 18 Pro Max Thread radio matter for HomeKit?

The useful distinction is that the phone rumor is not the same thing as the platform behavior. Thread on iPhone is also model-dependent. Apple added Thread to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max generation, the iPhone 16 line continued the broader direction, and the budget iPhone 16e reportedly omitted the Thread radio.[4] That history matters more than the usual “new iPhone, new chip” assumption. A 9to5Mac recap of comments from Thread Group president and Apple director Vividh Siddha described two goals for the iPhone Thread radio: smart-home automations without extra hardware, and keeping critical accessories such as a front-door lock usable during a power outage or network failure.[7]

That is a good design target. It is also not the same as a tested promise for every lock, every firmware version, every outage condition, and every Apple Home layout. A lock may have its own battery state, firmware limits, pairing requirements, and vendor-specific Matter or Thread behavior. The phone may be nearby, but the accessory still has to support the path. Treat the outage story as the reason this radio matters, not as proof that a specific lock will behave exactly the way you want on launch day.

For outage planning, the boring answer remains stronger: keep a real home hub, use devices with local control paths, maintain lock batteries, and verify the lock’s own emergency-access options. If one of those items is missing, the answer narrows. The phone may still be excellent. The accessory may still work through an Apple TV or HomePod. But the specific claim “the iPhone 18 Pro Max gives me direct local Thread control of this device” is not complete until the model, OS, and accessory firmware all line up.

iOS 27 and Thread 1.4 are worth watching, not buying around yet

The iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected in the iOS 27 generation, and iOS 27 Home coverage points to Thread 1.4 adoption as part of the platform context.[8] That may matter over time because Thread 1.4 is aimed at improving how Thread networks behave across ecosystems and border routers. But this is where the line between platform plumbing and buyer-facing behavior gets thin.

If Apple confirms a Thread radio in the iPhone 18 Pro Max, it will matter for HomeKit and Apple Home. It would make the phone a more capable local controller for supported Thread and Matter-over-Thread accessories, especially when the phone is nearby and the accessory firmware supports the direct-control path.

It will not make the iPhone 18 Pro Max a HomePod replacement, an Apple TV 4K replacement, or the home’s persistent Thread border router. Keep the hub. Treat the rumored radio as a useful local-control feature until Apple confirms the hardware and accessory makers confirm support.
