Yes — an 8GB RAM laptop is enough for a smart home hub if the laptop is being used as a dedicated Home Assistant box or as a plain appliance-style hub. It is much less comfortable if the same laptop must keep running Windows 11 while hosting Home Assistant in a virtual machine. That table is deliberately blunt because the 8GB label on the laptop hides the real operating model. A laptop wiped and dedicated to Home Assistant is a different machine from a laptop still expected to be someone’s Windows computer at night.

If the laptop runs Home Assistant directly, 8GB is not the limiting part

Home Assistant’s installation page lists 2GB RAM as the minimum for a Raspberry Pi install, and Home Assistant Green — the official small appliance meant to run Home Assistant — uses 4GB LPDDR4X RAM.[1][2] An 8GB laptop is therefore four times the official minimum and double the memory of Home Assistant Green.

That does not make every old laptop a perfect hub. It means RAM is unlikely to be the first reason it fails as a dedicated Home Assistant machine. Storage health, fan noise, battery swelling, sleep settings, Ethernet reliability, BIOS power recovery, and 24/7 electricity use often matter sooner.

If you mean an appliance hub, 8GB is already over the line

“Smart home hub” can also mean a purpose-built appliance: a SmartThings/Aeotec-style hub, Hubitat-style box, or Home Assistant Green. In that reading, an 8GB laptop is not merely enough; it is outside the hardware class. That comparison is not saying an Aeotec hub and a Home Assistant laptop do the same job. It is saying the phrase “smart home hub” spans very different devices. If you only need a vendor appliance to coordinate devices inside its ecosystem, laptop RAM is the wrong yardstick. If you want Home Assistant, local integrations, dashboards, automations, backups, and add-ons, the 8GB question becomes relevant again.

The Windows VM case is where 8GB stops feeling roomy

The official Home Assistant Windows path is a virtual machine. Home Assistant lists 2GB RAM and 2 vCPUs as the VM minimum, with the option to increase resources later.[3] On paper, that sounds easy on an 8GB laptop. In practice, the VM is not alone.

Windows keeps its own services, security tools, drivers, update process, display stack, and whatever the user leaves open. The hypervisor takes overhead. Home Assistant gets whatever remains after the host has taken its share. An “8GB laptop” is therefore not the same thing as “8GB available to Home Assistant.”

There is also a less glamorous compatibility problem: radios. A Home Assistant build usually needs a Zigbee or Z-Wave coordinator if it is replacing appliance hubs for local device control. Home Assistant’s Windows install page notes that Hyper-V has no USB support, which matters if you expected to pass a USB coordinator through to the VM.[3] Before picking the Windows route, check the actual coordinator and hypervisor path, not just the RAM. It is becoming a video workload host.

That distinction matters because a person can be correct twice and still make the wrong purchase: correct that 8GB is plenty for Home Assistant, and correct that the laptop can run Linux, but wrong that the same box should also become the camera AI server. Frigate is the place to stop counting only automations and start counting video streams, detectors, storage, and CPU/GPU acceleration.

Do not read the RAM dashboard too literally

There are two different scares that look similar in a dashboard: memory that is allocated or cached, and memory that is actually unavailable when Home Assistant needs it.

A Home Assistant Community thread about out-of-memory crashes described a VM with 4GB RAM failing during updates, while increasing the VM to 8GB allowed the update to succeed; the same discussion points to add-on growth as a driver.[8] That is the real risk on tight systems: not the quiet afternoon number, but the peak during updates, builds, database work, or add-on restarts.

A separate community thread shows the measurement trap from the other direction: Proxmox reported 7.6GB of 8GB allocated while Home Assistant itself reported about 3.3GB used.[9] That does not prove every high host-memory number is harmless. It proves the host dashboard may be showing allocation, page cache, or virtualization behavior rather than Home Assistant core consumption.

For a pre-purchase decision, the lesson is simple enough: do not buy new hardware only because one screenshot says RAM is “used,” and do not ignore crashes only because idle usage looked fine yesterday. Look at what was running when memory peaked, whether the host was updating, whether an add-on was compiling, and whether the VM has enough headroom for the worst hour, not just the average one.

If that table points to “enough,” do not buy a Mini PC just to satisfy a vague RAM fear. Put the laptop on a UPS if reliability matters, make backups, test restart behavior after power loss, and verify that your radios and integrations work.

If it points to “tight,” the next step is not automatically “buy the newest thing.” Decide what hub role you actually need.
